Astrology has risen in popularity and with that, has come the interest in understanding one’s own astrology chart. But let’s face it, even once you have your chart it’s like a riddle trying to understand all the symbols and lines. While I will admit it’s a lot to grasp, you can make the process easier by breaking it down into various components.
I’ve been studying Astrology for over a decade and can take you through the ins and outs without overwhelming you. Therefore, I created this guide to give you the rundown on the most important aspects of a natal chart. Once you have these fundamentals down, you can begin to dissect your own chart for insights into your life.
Don’t be hard on yourself if you still don’t understand your astrology chart. Sometimes it can be easier to have an expert interpret it since they’ll have more experience and objectivity. My favorite site for astrology readings is California Psychics because it has reputable, accurate, and trustworthy astrologers.
In a rush? These are the key components to understanding your astrology chart
- The 12 Houses — Each house represents different themes in your life, these are the “slices” in your chart. Here’s a breakdown on each house.
- The 12 Signs — One sign will rule over a house or a “slice” in your chart, the sign will flavor the energy of the house. Explore the energy of each sign.
- The 10 Planets — Just like signs, planets have their own energy that add flavor to the house they fall in and each planet rules over a sign. These are the meanings.
- The 4 Elements — Each sign has an associated element which influences its nature and expressed energy. Discover each sign’s element here.
- The 3 Modalities — Modalities are like the elements since they’re also associated with particular signs to further flavor their energy. Here’s everything on modalities.
- The Main Aspects — Aspects measure the distance or angles between planets to determine the nature of their relationship. These are the most important angles.
What Is an Astrology Chart & How to Calculate It?
An astrology chart, specifically a natal chart, is a cosmic snapshot of each celestial bodies’ positions at the exact moment and location of your birth. It provides a comprehensive view of your personality, life experiences, and destiny. Interpreting the birth chart involves understanding the significance of each planet’s placement in specific signs and houses.
To calculate your birth chart, you need your precise birth date, time, and location. The birth time is crucial for determining the positions of the Moon and the rising sign (ascendant), which significantly influence the chart. My go-to site for calculating natal charts is astro.com. You can input the information required and get your astrology chart in seconds.
Under the “zodiac and houses” menu you can customize your chart. The following guide is based on Tropical Astrology and I personally use the Whole Sign system. However, calculate your chart using Placidus and Whole Sign to see what resonates more. There are many different branches of Astrology but as a beginner, you shouldn’t focus much on this.
Breaking Down Your Astrology Chart — The Core Components
Your natal chart embodies many different puzzle pieces that can be interpreted independently and holistically. To keep things simple, start by understanding each separate component of your natal chart.
The 12 Houses
The 12 houses represent different themes of the chart, which translate to themes in life. Every chart will have the same 12 houses, each with the same significance. Therefore, regardless of whether you’re looking at your own chart or at mine, the meaning of each house will be the same.
First House
This is where most people will find their ascendant/rising sign. The first house is the house of self, therefore representing your appearance, identity, and approach to life. |
Second House
This is the house of values, possessions, and finances. It represents what you value, both internally and externally. Additionally, how you earn, spend, and invest money. |
Third House
The house of communication, siblings, and short journeys. It reflects your communication style, relationships with siblings, and your immediate environment. |
Fourth House
The house of home, family, and roots. It represents your upbringing, family dynamics, and the emotional foundation of your life. It’s also said to represent your early/late age. |
Fifth House
The house of creativity, romance, children, and self-expression. It signifies your creative pursuits, love affairs, situation with children, and the way you express yourself. |
Sixth House
The house of health, work, and service. It indicates your approach to daily routines, work habits, and overall well-being. |
Seventh House
Also known as the house of others. Represents your partnerships, marriage, and dealings with the public. It reflects your attitude towards partnerships and the qualities you seek in a partner. |
Eighth House
The house of transformation, shared resources, and intimacy. It represents deep, transformative experiences, shared resources, and matters related to birth and death. |
Ninth House
The house of higher education, philosophy, and long-distance travel. It signifies your beliefs, spiritual pursuits, and experiences gained through travel and higher learning. |
Tenth House
The house of career, public image, and reputation. It reflects your professional life, ambitions, and how you’re perceived in the public sphere. |
Eleventh House
The house of friendships, social networks, and aspirations. It indicates your relationships with friends, group affiliations, and your long-term goals. |
Twelfth House
The house of spirituality, the subconscious, and hidden matters. It represents your inner self, subconscious influences, and the realm of dreams and intuition. |
The 12 Signs
The 12 signs will always be in the same order, with Aries being first and Pisces being last. Additionally, each sign rules a house and this is different for everyone. Keep in mind that the sign ruling your first house is determined by your time of birth. For example, my chart “starts” with the sign Aquarius since it’s the sign that rules my first house.
Each sign flavors the houses in your chart and provides extra context for how you experience that house. Again, my first house is ruled by Aquarius which means my appearance, identity, and approach to life is influenced by Aquarian traits.

The 10 Planets
The planets and signs are closely related because each planet rules a sign. Therefore, there can be overlap in the energy they express but the planets also represent themes, much like the houses do. Think of the planets as the characters, the signs as the expression of these characters, and the houses as the realms in which they operate.
Everyone has the same planets but they fall in different houses and signs. Some planets are quick moving (Sun, Moon, Mercury) while others are very slow moving (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto). Slower moving planets are generational planets while quicker moving planets are personal planets.
Sun (Rules Leo)
The Sun represents the core self and is a crucial component of the natal chart. It indicates one’s basic identity, ego, and the overarching life path. The Sun’s placement reveals the individual’s primary motivations, sense of self, and overall vitality. It can also represent the father or male figures. |

The 4 Elements
There are 4 elements in Astrology: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Each element is associated with a different sign based on that sign’s disposition. The elements help to group signs that express themselves in similar ways or that may have similar overarching strengths/weaknesses.
Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
The fire element represents the spark of inspiration and passion. Individuals with a lot of fire in their natal chart are likely to be driven, enthusiastic, and focused on pursuing their goals. They tend to be courageous, creative, and pioneering. However, they can also be reactive, impulsive, and domineering. |
Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn).
The earth element represents stability and a connection to the physical world. People with a concentration of earth in their chart are often reliable, diligent, and value tangible achievements. These signs thrive with routine, practicality, and predictability. That said, they can be overly rigid, materialistic, and critical as well. |
Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
The air element symbolizes thoughts, ideas, and communication. Those with a lot of air in their chart tend to be social, philosophic, and value mental stimulation. Air energy thrives in situations that require analytical thinking, diplomacy, and innovative ideas. But, they can be flighty, idealistic, and noncommittal. |
Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
The water element represents emotions, intuition, and connections. People with a lot of water tend to be empathetic, sensitive, and attuned to the emotional undercurrents. The energy thrives at nurturing, transformation, and establishing emotional connections. However, water signs can be moody, oversensitive, and passive. |
The 3 Modalities
Much like the elements, the 3 modalities or quadruplicities act as a classification system for the signs. Modalities act as an additional tool to further understand the expressions and tendencies of signs and how they relate to one another.
For instance, Aquarius is a fixed air sign which means they’re inclined to ideas but since they’re fixed, they’ll be more attached and committed to these ideas. In contrast, Gemini is a mutable air sign which means they’re also inclined to ideas but they’ll be more flexible in their approach.
Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
Cardinal signs mark the beginning of each season and represent the energy of initiation. Individuals with a lot of cardinal energy are likely to be proactive, assertive, and inclined to take the lead. Cardinal energy thrives in situations that require starting new projects, taking charge, and setting the tone for change. |
Fixed Signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
Fixed signs stabilize and consolidate energy, providing endurance and determination. Individuals with fixed energy are likely to be persistent, reliable, and inclined to maintain the status quo. They thrive in situations that require commitment, endurance, and the ability to see projects through to completion. |
Mutable Signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)
Mutable signs represent the energy of adaptability, improvement, and transition. These signs tend to be versatile, open-minded, and comfortable with change. Mutable signs thrive in situations that require flexibility, communication, and the ability to navigate transitions with ease. |
The Main Aspects
There are several aspects in Astrology but the 4 below are the most commonly used and arguably, the most important. Aspects give you a sense for the level of harmony or tension in your chart. They can highlight the strengths in your chart as well as the weaknesses.
Conjunction ☌ (0-10 degrees)
Conjunctions occur when two planets are close by degree, symbolizing unity and fusion of their energies. The energy is often intense, amplifying the qualities of the planets. This can manifest positively or present challenges, depending on the nature of the planets involved. Conjunctions mark the beginning of a cycle, suggesting new opportunities and fresh starts in the life areas represented by the planets and houses involved. |
Squares □ (90 degrees)
Squares create tension and challenges between planets, urging individuals to address and overcome obstacles. They occur in signs of conflicting elements or modalities. Despite tension, squares provide opportunities for personal and spiritual growth. Overcoming challenges can lead to resilience and self-discovery. Squares often prompt individuals to take action, encouraging proactive approaches to resolving conflicts. |
Oppositions ☍ (180 degrees)
Oppositions emphasize the need for balance between planets since they highlight polarities and require integration for harmony. Oppositions often play out in relationships, involving external factors or people. Learning to navigate opposing forces fosters personal growth. Oppositions embody both duality and unity, requiring individuals to find common ground and embrace the complementary aspects of the opposing forces. |
Trines △ (120 degrees)
Trines represent a harmonious flow of energy between planets, indicating compatibility. Planets in trine are typically signs of the same element. Trines suggest innate talents and natural abilities. The energies of the planets work together effortlessly, contributing to areas where individuals excel with ease. Individuals with trines may find it easier to express the qualities associated with the planets involved, fostering positive outcomes. |
Sextiles ⚹ (60 degrees)
Sextiles create opportunities for growth and cooperation. Planets in sextile are signs of complementary elements. While less pronounced than trines, sextiles offer a supportive and encouraging flow of energy. Individuals can seize opportunities for personal development and positive outcomes. Success with sextiles often requires active engagement to turn potential into tangible benefits. |
What Your Rising Sign Says About You — All 12 Signs
Aries Rising
Aries risings are assertive, dynamic, and pioneering in nature. Their outlook on life is often enthusiastic, strategic, and gritty. Aries risings typically have scars on their body, have a younger appearance, and a strong body.
Taurus Rising
Taurus risings are grounded, stable, and reliable. However, they tend to view things from what’s most comfortable and valuable. That said, there’s a tendency for becoming materialistic, stubborn, and stuck in their ways. They usually have an aesthetic look, a sturdy frame, but can be prone to weight gain.
Gemini Rising
Gemini risings are quick-witted, adaptable, and resourceful. They have a curious approach to life and like to network and share ideas with others. But, it can be difficult to pin down their true identity since they’re good chameleons and jack of all trades. Gemini risings tend to have a youthful demeanor, bright eyes, sometimes glasses, and a lean appearance.
Cancer Rising
Cancer risings are nurturing, sensitive, and protective. This sign has a safety-first approach and they tend to be quite attached to their roots, family, or home-life. However, they can be moody and overly cautious with unfamiliar circumstances. Cancer risings tend to have lunar qualities, so their features are usually round, large, and expressive.
Leo Rising
Leo risings are charismatic, expressive, and powerful. They see life as a movie and are always looking for ways to make a statement with their expression. That said, Leo risings can cast a shadow on those around them and be too preoccupied with recognition. There’s usually a bold quality to their appearance, whether it be bold hair, makeup, or features.
Virgo Rising
Virgo risings are detail-oriented, analytical, and helpful. This sign has a mission for improvement and they like to be useful to the people around them. However, Virgo risings can be their own worst critics and come off as overly modest. They usually have sharp, alert eyes, a polished appearance, and an intelligent demeanor.
Libra Rising
Libra risings are charming, diplomatic, and social. They try to have a fair, well-rounded outlook on life and like to cooperate with others to bring their ideals to life. But, they can get too attached to how it should be, rather than how it is, and have a hard time taking action. They have a graceful demeanor, artistic aesthetic, and harmonious features.
Scorpio Rising
Scorpio risings are intense, perceptive, and deep. This sign views life as a mystery to solve and has a magnetic energy that draws in transformative opportunities. They can be overly cynical and suspicious which can leave them feeling isolated from deep connections. They usually have dark, strong features and a prominent energy that’s hard to ignore.
Sagittarius Rising
Sagittarius risings are optimistic, expansive, and adventurous. They’re life-long learners that are always looking for ways to expand their perception of the world. But, they can be impulsive and struggle to attend to the important details in life. There’s usually a carefree but wise demeanor to them and their energy feels enthusiastic yet fiery.
Capricorn Rising
Capricorn risings are ambitious, disciplined, and patient. Their general approach to life is one of discipline and responsibility since they usually set out to achieve a lot. However, they can be too structured and focused on their long-term goals that they lose their sense of enjoyment. They usually have sharp, angled features and narrow body frames.
Aquarius Rising
Aquarius risings are eccentric, open-minded, and unconventional. They approach everything with innovation and strive to make a greater impact on humanity with their efforts. But, they can be overly contrarian and unrealistic with their ideals. Aquarius risings have one thing in common, which is that they all have a unique look that stands out from the crowd.
Pisces Rising
Pisces risings are dreamy, empathetic, and creative. They see life through a very intuitive lens and this is often what guides them in the right direction. Their gentle, sensitive, and artistic nature can sometimes lead them to escapism and self-sacrifice. Pisces risings have a watery quality to their eyes, an ethereal aura, and the demeanor of an old-soul.
How Do I Interpret My Astrology Chart?: Step-by-Step Guide
Interpreting a natal chart is not a one-size fits all approach. Each Astrologer has a different technique depending on the kind of Astrology they practice. Aside from a solid understanding of the fundamentals, natal chart interpretation requires a sharp intuition. That said, this guide will give you a general framework of how you can approach your chart.
1. Start With the Angular Houses
Angular houses align with four cardinal points: the 1st house(Ascendant/AC), 4th house (IC), 7th house (Descendant/DC), and 10th house (Midheaven/MC). Angular houses are the most active points in a natal chart and any planets sitting near them will activate the energy further. Therefore, pay attention to any planets that sit closest to these points.
It’s useful to calculate your chart using the Placidus system because it incorporates all 4 points/axes. However, if you don’t have an accurate time of birth this approach won’t be accurate so it would be best to use the Whole Sign system instead. Regardless, any planets sitting in angular houses are noteworthy and should be studied.
If you have many planets sitting in angular houses or close to the cardinal points, you may feel restless and naturally inclined to act. The planet’s sitting in these houses will give you an indication for how the active energy will manifest. Let’s say you have Jupiter in your 1st/conjunct your AC, you may express a lot of wise, philosophical, and expansive energy.
2. Consider the Sun and Moon
Much like the angular houses, exploring the position of your Sun and Moon can act as an anchor point for interpretation. These luminaries play pivotal roles in shaping your personality, emotions, and life path. And while they’re not the end all, be all of your chart, the house they sit in becomes more important.
For example, the Sun in the 8th house can give you Scorpio-like qualities even if your Sun is in Leo. That’s because the 8th house is ruled by Scorpio and deals with many Scorpinonic themes. For instance, your life path may deal with themes of transformation, crisis, healing, deep-research, shared resources, and other 8th house themes.
To further illustrate, Moon in the 5th can indicate a creative entrepreneur or a nurturing role caring for children. It can even indicate your mother was a teacher or that you express yourself best through creative ventures. Maybe even that you feel emotionally fulfilled while entertaining or performing in some way.
3. Identify Concentrations of Energy
Identifying concentrations of energy involves looking for any clusters of planets or points within specific signs or houses. A notable example of this is a stellium, which occurs when three or more planets are closely grouped together in the same sign or house.
Concentrations of energy signify intensified focus and activity in the houses they sit in. This dominance can be linked to overarching themes in your life, and considering the elements and modalities of the dominant signs can shed light on the type of energy you’ll experience.
For example, a stellium or multiple planets in the 2nd house indicates a focus on building one’s own assets, finances, and self-worth. It shows a natural ability to generate and manage money, in addition to a clear understanding of what one brings to the table. But, too much energy in one area of the chart often leads to unbalances in other parts.
4. Explore Your Chart Ruler
A simple way to determine the most important point in your chart is by identifying your chart ruler. The chart ruler is the planet that rules over the sign that governs your first house. For example, Aquarius in the 1st house means that the chart’s ruler is Saturn and Uranus. You would then pay special attention to the placement of both planets.
The house placement of your chart ruler will illustrate the area of life that you’re most focused or active in. For example, if Jupiter rules your 1st house and sits in the 2nd house, themes related to values, possessions, and finances will become prominent. You could go on to become an excellent investor or uphold strong values in work environments.
5. Examine Aspects Between Planets
Aspects are very important because they show interactions between planets. Think of them as two characters in a movie that are having an interaction. Pay attention to whether it’s a favorable or difficult aspect, since this will reveal the type of interaction. Additionally, consider the energies of both planets and how similar or different they may be.
Tense aspects aren’t always bad since they can ignite change and action. Alternatively, harmonious aspects aren’t always good since they can sometimes bring too much comfort and compliance. Depending on which planets make contact by aspect can also make a difference in how favorable a certain aspect may be.
In Traditional Astrology there are friend, neutral, and enemy planets. It’s said that a negative aspect between two friend planets is less negative and more constructive. Alternatively, a negative aspect between two enemy planets can be quite challenging.
Friends | Neutral | Enemies
Sun | Moon, Mars, Jupiter | Mercury | Venus, Saturn |
Moon | Sun, Mercury | Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn | None |
Mercury | Sun, Venus | Mars, Jupiter, Saturn | Moon |
Venus | Mercury, Saturn | Mars, Jupiter | Sun, Moon |
Mars | Sun, Moon, Jupiter | Venus, Saturn | Mercury |
Jupiter | Sun, Moon, Mars | Saturn | Mercury, Venus |
Saturn | Mercury, Venus | Jupiter | Sun, Moon, Mars |
Let’s say we’re analyzing our chart ruler, Saturn which sits in the 3rd house. Upon further investigation, we notice Saturn is opposite Venus. Saturn and Venus are friendly towards each other, so although there may be challenging energy to overcome, there is more opportunity for a favorable outcome since the planets like each other.
6. Look for Planet Conditions
To get an even more in-depth understanding of the influences in your chart, consider the condition of planets. Certain planets prefer to be in certain signs because they can express their energy with less resistance. If a planet is a character, the sign is the environment it lives in.
Therefore, an environment that’s favorable for the character helps that character thrive and it’s the same for planets. The opposite can be said for incompatible planets and signs. Further, there are 4 categories that represent a planet’s condition in a particular sign: Domicile, Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall.
Domicile | Exaltation | Detriment | Fall
Sun | Leo | Aries | Aquarius | Libra |
Moon | Cancer | Taurus | Capricorn | Scorpio |
Mercury | Gemini & Virgo | Virgo | Sagittarius & Pisces | Pisces |
Venus | Taurus & Libra | Pisces | Scorpio & Aries | Virgo |
Mars | Aries & Scorpio | Capricorn | Libra & Taurus | Cancer |
Jupiter | Sagittarius & Pisces | Cancer | Gemini & Virgo | Capricorn |
Saturn | Capricorn & Aquarius | Libra | Cancer & Leo | Aries |
Domicile is the sign that the planet rules and it feels most comfortable here. For example, Mars is in its domicile when it’s in Aries. Exaltation is a sign that a planet really likes to be in but it doesn’t necessarily rule over it. Using the same example, Mars thrives in Capricorn because its energy nurtures the expression of Mars.
Alternatively, Detriment refers to a sign that is opposite a planet’s ruling sign and the planet doesn’t feel comfortable in its energy. This would be when Mars is in Libra because Libra is opposite Aries. A planet in Fall is the sign that’s opposite a planet’s Exaltation. This would be Mars in Cancer since Cancer is opposite Capricorn.

That’s how I found AstroBabe Babett, which ultimately saved me a lot of time browsing.
The search filters on Purple Garden are rather basic and not the most helpful. However, it’s one of the only sites that offers live chat, voice, and video readings which is a plus. Having more options when it comes to reading types is ideal because you get your astrology reading on your terms and you can feel in your element.

She’s a gifted clairaudient and clairsentient reader so her astrology insights went beyond what I have been able to see in my own chart.
A minor inconvenience is that the astrologers on Keen get busy and you can be left waiting. But, I use the arrange call feature which makes it simple to book a specific time and date with my astrologer. FAQs on Astrology Charts
What do astrologers look for when reading astrology charts?
Astrologers analyze a multitude of factors when reading astrology charts. Reading charts doesn’t have a universal approach, so this will vary across astrologers. However, key elements include the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and their interactions in different astrological houses.
The rising sign and the distribution of elements and modalities further shape the interpretation. Aspects, such as conjunctions, squares, trines, and sextiles, provide nuanced details, revealing the dynamics between celestial bodies. In essence, a thorough natal chart examination involves a holistic exploration that looks for repeating patterns.
How can you tell if two astrology charts are compatible?
Astrologers primarily examine the positions of the Sun and Moon, as well as the placements of Venus and Mars to determine compatibility. Having these planets in the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th house can be positive in romance. Also, harmonious aspects, such as trines and sextiles, between these personal planets often indicate a favorable connection.
It’s best to have an astrologer draw a composite or synastry chart of both charts for an accurate opinion. And while no chart guarantees a perfect match, a skilled astrologer can identify areas of resonance and potential challenges, offering valuable insights for navigating the complexities of a relationship.
Can your astrology chart predict your future?
Some astrologers would argue yes. Astrology charts are not inherently deterministic blueprints for the future but they highlight predispositions and possible trends. Therefore, astrologers focus on forecasting energetic influences and cosmic patterns that may impact you. With that in mind, free will plays a crucial role in shaping outcomes.
Transits, progressions, and solar returns provide timelines for potential shifts in various life areas. However, the interpretation emphasizes probabilities rather than certainties. An astrology chart serves as a tool for self-awareness, and it’s meant to help you navigate life’s twists and turns with a deeper understanding of the cosmic energies at play.
Bottom Line
Discovering the meaning of your natal chart is an exciting journey that can leave you feeling more connected with yourself. Not only that, but your natal chart can give you clarity and direction when you feel lost. A holistic understanding of your chart can take time and patience, but the more you study the fundamentals the easier it becomes.
I encourage you to interpret your natal chart on your own but don’t write off a session with an astrologer either. A professional’s interpretation can give you a unique perspective and even inspire you to approach your chart in a new way. My favorite astrologer is on California Psychics and as a newcomer, you can get your first astrology session for $1/min.
