Exploring the depths of ancient Egyptian spirituality, Normandi Elis shares her transformative journey in an exclusive interview with MysticMag.
Sparked by a friend’s suggestion to read The Book of the Dead, this moment set her on a path of translating sacred texts, studying hieroglyphs, and uncovering profound spiritual teachings. Through her work, Normandi bridges ancient wisdom and modern understanding, offering insights into the alchemy of the soul.
Her story is a testament to the enduring power of spiritual discovery and the legacies that guide us.
What inspired your deep connection to ancient Egyptian spirituality and culture?
What truly inspired me was a friend who suggested I read The Book of the Dead. We had been discussing spiritual topics, and he took me to a bookstore, pulled Wallace Budge’s Book of the Dead off the shelf, handed it to me, and said, “Buy this.” So, I did. Shortly after, my friend left town, leaving me his Rosicrucian teachings to study alongside The Book of the Dead.
Not long after, I moved to Colorado, and before I could reconnect with him, he passed away. It felt as though I had inherited a legacy—a purpose handed to me through him. I believe he was moved by spirit to guide me toward this path.
Following his passing, I started a translation workshop. I initially took classes in Spanish translation, but eventually, my passion led me to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. For over 10 years, I worked on translations, including Awakening Osiris and other texts. Along the way, I explored a variety of languages—Mayan, Ogham, and others—making cross-references to deepen my understanding.
It was this journey of exploration, sparked by my friend’s encouragement and spirit, that cemented my connection to ancient Egyptian spirituality and culture.
How does Awakening Osiris bring the wisdom of the Egyptian “Book of the Dead” to modern readers?
The Book of the Dead is essentially a compilation of prayers, often referred to as chapters, dedicated to divine beings in their various forms. It serves as both a roadmap to the underworld—guiding one on what to expect after death—and an exercise in consciousness. It’s about transformation, a metaphysical or alchemical process where one transcends their current state by adopting the qualities or “talents” of divine beings like a hawk, a crocodile, or an ibis.
These beings, such as Thoth, Khepri, Horus, and Sobek, represent different aspects of divinity. For example, you might enter a trance state to connect with the essence of Sobek, the crocodile, allowing his wisdom to flow through you. This interaction could reveal insights about navigating the challenges of modern life, like understanding how to adapt to change or finding clarity amid chaos. Even the dung beetle offers profound lessons—transforming negativity into positivity.
Each chapter of the Book of the Dead encourages us to explore and uncover the consciousness that shapes us as individuals. By engaging with these teachings, we can gain insights into our purpose and how to navigate life’s complexities.
For example, I recently taught a class on writing one’s soul contract through the lens of the Book of the Dead. It was a powerful experience involving journaling and introspection, helping participants align with their deeper purpose while drawing on the ancient wisdom of the text.
Can you share the significance of your clairvoyant circles and metaphysical classes?
Clairvoyant circles are significant because they provide a space to develop empathetic and clairvoyant talents within a supportive group. These circles typically involve a medium, which acts as the central channel, supported by a grounding individual and others contributing their energy to form a cohesive, powerful unit. The purpose of these circles is to channel messages from ascended masters, loved ones in spirit, or higher beings, offering guidance and insights into personal challenges or spiritual growth.
For example, I often channel deities like Isis, Osiris, and Ptah during these sessions. Ptah, in particular, is extraordinary—when he “speaks,” it’s as if light emanates from his words, bringing clarity and illumination to the space.
Metaphysical classes complement this by teaching practical skills for spiritual development. These classes help participants become better energy conduits by learning to hold and manage vibrations effectively. They also cover topics like astrology, numerology, sacred calendars, and Hermetic philosophy, enabling students to align with natural laws and divine timing in their daily lives. Together, these practices create a profound foundation for spiritual exploration and personal transformation.
What is the most profound experience you’ve had during one of your guided trips to Egypt?
That’s a challenging question because every trip offers a unique learning experience and unfolds at a different level of understanding. However, I’d say one of the most profound experiences happened when I fell seriously ill in Egypt. It’s not the best place to get sick, and I ended up passing out at a temple. I have no memory of what happened for about two days, and I later woke up in a hospital.
My attendant, Ahmed, stayed by my side the entire time I was unconscious. When I regained awareness, I remember seeing myself walk through a doorway in the hospital, surrounded by light. I asked Ahmed how long he had been there, and he replied, “The whole time—about three days.” It felt like I had died and somehow made my way back into my body. During this experience, I vividly recall being accompanied by Hathor, the cow goddess, and Isis, who were both healing me.
Another transformative moment occurred inside the sarcophagus at the Great Pyramid. Lying there, I allowed myself to leave my body and felt waves of energy moving through me, like being gently sloshed with water, except it was pure sound and vibration. I experienced the pyramid opening, and I ascended to the stars—an ancient Egyptian initiation practice.
When I returned to my body, I felt as though I had been granted permission to engage in activities and rituals I hadn’t been ready for before. It was an initiation into a priestesshood of sorts, marking a significant milestone in my spiritual journey.
How do your roles as a Spiritualist minister and medium influence your writing and teachings?
As a Spiritualist minister and medium, my roles deeply influence both my writing and teaching. For example, when I wrote Hieroglyphic Words of Power, I combined my knowledge of numerology with guidance from a spirit guide. My process involved pulling a hieroglyph into consciousness, asking my spirit guide for insights across multiple levels of understanding, and writing the responses as they came to me. This would go on for hours each day, allowing me to translate the symbols into a form that others could comprehend.
I also rely heavily on the astral realm to connect with spirit. I trust spirit in my dreams, where much of this work takes place. I keep notebooks next to my bed and write during the day, but at night, I leave my manuscripts near statues of scribes, such as one of my favorites, who I treat as companions in the creative process. Before sleeping, I might symbolically ask them to “wake me up” when they have something to share. Often, I’ll wake up with new insights about the hieroglyphs or the material I’m working on.
I view my mediumship as a talent that allows me to communicate with beings like Isis, Thoth, and Seshat, the goddess of scribes and the Akashic Records. This connection to the spirit realm helps me shape my books and classes, making them deeply rooted in spiritual and metaphysical understanding.
What advice would you give to someone exploring ancient wisdom for personal transformation?
My advice is to be mindful of how you use the information given to you by spirit. The knowledge you receive isn’t always light and fluffy—it can sometimes have darker aspects. It’s essential to practice discernment and determine whether the insights you receive are meant for personal transformation or to be shared with others.
I follow four key principles that are vital when working with ancient wisdom:
- To Know – Seek and understand the wisdom being presented.
- To Dare – Have the courage to apply and integrate that wisdom into your life.
- To Align – Ensure your actions are in harmony with spirit, so the knowledge is used with integrity.
- To Keep Silent – This is perhaps the most important. Holding onto the energy of what you’ve learned without sharing it prematurely allows it to grow and transform you.
Keeping silent doesn’t just protect you from external harm or misuse of your words—it preserves the energy you’ve cultivated. For instance, when I used to teach creative writing, I’d advise my students not to share the plot of their stories. If they did, the act of sharing would often dissipate the energy and momentum needed to complete the writing. Similarly, holding onto the wisdom you gain keeps the energy potent, enabling you to fully embody and act on it.
These four principles—to know, to will, to dare, and to keep silent—form the foundation for anyone delving into ancient wisdom for personal transformation.
