MysticMag’s Marko Velimirovic had the pleasure to meet Mary Spohn – a prominent psychic reader from Colorado. In this interview, Mary provides insight into her professional life, as well as some advice for new psychic readers.
What inspired you to start your psychic reading business?
Mary Spohn: During the time of the Black Forest Fire, two people died. They were a married couple, and I knew one of them – he was a very revered engineer. I went to his funeral and shortly after I heard his voice, he came to me. I was laying in bed, and he said: “Mary it was all my fault” whilst he was crying. I thought, is he trying to tell me that the black forest fire was his fault?
It turns out that he didn’t start the fire but he had another message. However, I didn’t know what to do with that information, so I left it alone. About a week later, I was in a psychic fair. I wasn’t one of its hosts, I was just a visitor, and there was a woman there giving a lecture on how the electromagnetic spectrum worked with respect to other dimensions of reality. I was a space system analyst and was very familiar with the electromagnetic spectrum.
As I was sitting there listening to her, the man that had spoken to me came to me. I felt him tapping me on the shoulder as he said: “She’s speaking our language, I want you to go and talk to her”. I went to have a session with her and told her what was going on. I asked her why he came to me? We barely knew each other. She told me that the reason he came to me was because I could hear him.
I often had psychic messages from past family members, I’ve always been in touch with them and felt their presence around me, but that was the first time I had contact from outside. The woman told me I was psychic and suggested I get a deck of tarot cards, learn the cards, and write all over them – to help me learn them. That’s exactly what I did.
What is the most popular reading that customers are looking for and what are the most common concerns that interest them?
MS: The most common type of reading is, invariably, relationships. People want to know if they are going to meet someone, how can they save their relationship, or if their husband is having an affair.
Also, very popular topics are jobs, life purpose, and life-changing decisions. A big concern for many people is, for example: “Am I fulfilling my life purpose? Am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing?” Sometimes people just feel like they are stuck, not moving forward.
Are some types of psychic reading more demanding or difficult than others?
MS: Generally speaking, readings are very individual. The readings that are difficult are with people that don’t give you any feedback. What you have in front of you is a pile of cards, a spread, or a layout. And these are prompts, there is no script for them.
There are various different ways of interpreting cards. For example, a picture card of a person, like a king, might mean your male energy, a male in your life or it might be your boss or your husband, there is nothing on the card that tells you exactly what it is. You are looking for feedback, you are asking open-ended questions, you are prodding and probing.
Some people feel like they shouldn’t give you any information, because if you are truly psychic you’ll know everything. Other people give you lots of feedback. These tend to be the best readings, you can truly steer them on to the track of information that they are looking for, which is their message from spirit.
The hardest people to read are the ones that don’t give you any feedback. When that happens to you, you have to truly reach down and trust yourself. You have to pull in everything that you know, your confidence level, your skill, and besides receiving your intuitive messages, you have to watch people’s body language, look them in the eye and be able to detect the changes in their attitude as you mention certain things, to see whether that’s triggering or resonating with them.
Some of the psychic sessions are still performed in person. What about you? How is your work being affected by the pandemic?
MS: I have an in-person business. I do some remote readings, I’m always happy to do those. It does not make any difference to the reading whether it is in-person or not, you get the information from beyond the veil anyway.
But I prefer to do in-person readings, so I did shut down for about six weeks when we were asked to at the end of March and then I opened up again on May 1st. Now, the business is doing just as well as before the beginning of the pandemic, so I am completely unaffected by the pandemic at this point.
What advice would you give to a new psychic reader? Is it better for them to work independently or as a part of a team?
MS: I think you have to do both. There are a lot of benefits to working as part of a team – you get different perspectives and different energy, and you get to see how other people are interpreting, how they are using their psychic intuitive skills.
That being said, I would be very careful in a team about being influenced by the team perspective, or another individual’s perspective. One could argue that there are archetypes that hold true for all people, but even archetypes that have a common meaning can be individualized and interpreted differently by individuals.
A common one might be a bunch of pink roses. When you see a bunch of pink roses, to one person that might be them sending love, or to another it might mean someone is offering friendship. You have to know when you see a symbol what that means to you, and you can only get that from your own personal experience.
You also have to do a lot of work by yourself, working with yourself or your friends and family, people who you trust and feel comfortable with, where it doesn’t matter if you get things wrong. It’s important to develop your own sense of correlating what you are getting from spirit with what is resonating with that person.
What is the most important detail of maintaining a relationship of mutual trust with your customers?
MS: The only way that customers are going to trust you in this field is when you are providing accurate information. The question then becomes: how do you provide accurate information? How do you be authentic? If you are not authentic, basically you are making stuff up, and if you make stuff up, they will know that’s not resonating with them.
First, you have to learn to trust yourself. You have to build your skill and build confidence, and you do that by working with friends and family. You also have to trust that the right message is going to come through for them. When I started reading, and still when nothing is coming through, I will ask my guides for help and turn to one of the archangels and ask for insights.
Then you have to learn to understand what is an insight, what is a download of information versus what is in your ego-mind. Obviously, when you do a reading you bring all of your skill, you don’t just bring your psychic skill, you don’t leave behind your intelligence, or wisdom, you pull those in and integrate it all. But when you are trying to get a direct message from the person who you are reading from, when you want to get a message from them, you have to really tune in to that message and know that it is authentic.
When I’m reading somebody, I’m continuously listening to my body, I’m waiting for the packets to come in, and then as I unpack the message, I’m listening to my body to be sure that I am on the right track. My physical body gives me undeniable signals. When I don’t feel that, I know that perhaps its coming from my ego-mind.
When you learn how to be authentic you give really good readings, and your customers automatically trust you because they are resonating with everything you are saying.
