This week, Mystic Mag’s Marko Velimirovic had the opportunity to speak with Magali Morales, Spiritual Counselor, who kindly agreed to share some information about her career, Evolutionary Astrology, and her relationship with customers.
When did you first know that being a Spiritual Counselor and Astrologer was your calling and how did it come about?
It was a winding path that surprised me, but looking back now I see the universe was conspiring to make me into what I am today.
In my early 20s I got my first astrology reading and it gave me so much information about myself. The level of accuracy with which the astrologer described my strengths and my life’s greatest lessons was astounding. I bought my first astrology textbook the following day, and I never stopped learning astrology as something fascinating, but with no idea I would one day become a professional.
My first career was as a translator. Then when I moved to the U.S. in my mid-20s I began my own healing journey from child abuse and sexual violence. After living in an intentional community in Oregon where I gained a profound environmental education, I decided I wanted to work with people, because when people aren’t well, they don’t have enough capacity to care about their environment.
I started my social work career at a shelter for homeless youth and a rape crisis center. But I wanted to do deeper work with clients, so I returned to grad school to become a psychotherapist and specialized in trauma healing.
The year I graduated from my degree in clinical social work, I took my first astrology course with Steven Forrest to find out if my level of skill was sufficient to start doing professional readings. And while I worked as a family therapist in an agency, I started a private practice offering astrology consultations. Astrology got to the essence of a person’s emotional needs and growth so fast. I discovered that one astrology session was worth years of therapy.
I went on to learn a wide array of shamanic tools and practices from teachers from different traditions: I learned about ritual from Sobonfu Somé, a teacher from the Dagara tribe of Burkina Faso. From Hank Wesselman and Jill Kuykendall I learned Core Shamanism, Soul Retrieval and Hawaiian shamanism as taught by one of the great Kahunas, Hale Makua. Going back to my roots, I learned about the Mexican tradition of Nahualism from Sergio Magaña Ocelocóyotl, among others.
Eventually I left the mental health system and began incorporating shamanic and astrological practices into a more holistic, effective and fruitful way of working with clients.
What services do you offer?
I offer four kinds of Evolutionary Astrology consultations: natal, life cycles (a detailed forecast of your astrological “weather” for the next two years, relationship, and natal readings for parents of young children with a focus on helping children thrive. My consultations are 2 hours long, which gives the client time to relate the astrological insights to their lived experience and participate in a dialogue.
I offer Shamanic Healing sessions that include Soul Retrieval, and spiritual counseling sessions that can include somatic trauma healing, dreamwork, astrology-informed counseling, tools for manifestation, and more.
In the past two years I have also been leading trauma healing support groups and teaching astrology and shamanism. I plan to expand those offerings in the near future.
How would you describe Evolutionary Astrology?
Evolutionary Astrology is a modern branch of Western astrology that upholds the principle that human beings come to Earth School to learn and evolve. In Evolutionary Astrology we don’t subscribe to fatalistic views or fortune-telling. We believe that there is no bad planet, aspect or placement, but that when challenging placements show up in a chart, they are there to teach us lessons.
The chart is a blueprint of how you become the best version of yourself, and it contains valuable information about your innate gifts, the lessons you came here to learn, and your life purpose.
What can a person expect from your sessions?
My sessions are confidential and I have a commitment to treat my clients with utmost respect. I make my clients two promises: to always tell them the truth as I understand it, and to never tell them what to do, because above everything I respect their self-determination. I can give ideas and suggestions, connect them to resources and help them create a daily spiritual practice, but I always support their choices above all else.
I begin every session with grounding meditation. The rest of the session is tailored around the client’s goals and preferences. Even though my clients often come to see me for support with difficult topics—like trauma and loss—our sessions often end on a high note, with greater ease, joy, perspective and even laughter.
What is the most important detail in maintaining a relationship of mutual trust with clients?
To always work from a place of non judgment, of unconditional love and support, while also having clear professional boundaries.
What is the best part of your job?
My ability to work part time and set my own schedule is essential because I am the mother of a young child and my parenting responsibilities have a high priority. My favorite part of this job, however, is doing deep work with wonderful clients, and knowing that together we are creating healing that ripples out to our world in need.
