What were your professional beginnings like and what led you down this spiritual path?
I was a musician from the age of 12 and loved the music of the late 60s and early 70s. As an adult, I played mostly rock music but also wrote the songs and performed on a bossa nova/jazz record when I lived in Sweden. One of my rock bands was signed to MCA Records in the early 90s. We released two albums, toured, and had 2 videos on MTV. But during those years, I also got into drugs. At first, it was marijuana when I was 16, but then over the years I experimented and used many other drugs. At the age of 39, after a particularly extreme night of taking drugs, I was brought to my knees with an urgent plea for help. Previous to this, I had literally no interest at all in spirituality, God, or religion. I had been turned away from Christianity early in my childhood. But this plea for help changed me, and at that moment all the drugs ended, with no after-effects. I was cast on the spiritual path with a burning question, “What is liberation.” This was a miraculous and very gracious event in my life. My spiritual path lasted for 8 years.
Over those years I was very one-pointed and dedicated to finding an answer to that question. The question propelled me anywhere I needed to go and to meet whomever I needed to meet. I traveled from the USA to India, through Europe and India again, meeting any teacher I could meet and eventually living with two genuine Indian masters in India. Over those years I read every book about liberation I could get my hands on, meditated countless hours, and had many mystical experiences. Finally, in meeting my last teacher, my path was finished. 8 years after that, someone suggested that I share the work of freedom, and so I began doing the work I do now. My most recent book, The Audacity of Freedom, is an autobiography and talks about all of this. But inherent in this book is the actual message of freedom itself. So, it is more than just a story.
What is an “Online Intensive”?
An online intensive, just like an in-person intensive here in India, is about coming to know the message of freedom and for a paradigm shift to happen for you so that your way of being in life becomes different than it has been previously. The online intensive lasts 8 weeks, with 3 meetings per week. I take people through a means of inquiry that reveals their essentially free nature. We begin with the recognition of your own essential being, which is and always has been free. Once this is doubtless, we come to know what being a true devotee means. It means that you become devoted to the truth of your own free essential being. This is essential in bringing about a true shift. We then explore the idea of free will, doership, and the question of whether you have created anything about yourself, or not. Since it is only ego that has the false belief in doership, this recognition means the end of ego.
After an intensive, you will this life in a very different what than you had before, with less fear, contraction, and suffering caused by the belief in past and future. It is simply living life now, in this moment, at rest, complete and whole, content and fulfilled.
What can people expect from your open meetings?
On Open Meetings, I begin with about 20 minutes of guided meditation to come to the recognition of your own free essential being, which has been here your entire life, but you have just not noticed. This is the very beginning of the work I do. After that meditation, we have questions and answers for the remainder of the meeting. These meetings are an introduction to me and to the work I do, and from them, many people then join an intensive, either online or here in India, where I live.
As an author, what books have you written and what are they about?
I’ve written 4 books, here in chronological order:
– Liberation IS, The End of the Spiritual Path
– The Way of Freedom, Conversations with Salvadore Poe
– Blown Wide Open, A Book of Holidays
– The Audacity of Freedom, A Journey of Spiritual Liberation
Are you currently working on any new books or projects that we can expect to see the light of day soon?
I just released my latest book, an autobiography, The Audacity of Freedom.
I have a new 8 Week Online Intensive, beginning April 20.
Is there anything else about your work that you’d like to share that we haven’t covered?
I don’t see myself at all as a guru, or even a teacher. It is the message that is important, not the messenger. This is largely lost in most spiritual teachings. I was given the message of freedom almost 20 years ago. It was life-changing for me. 12 years ago, someone asked me several times to share and so finally, I agreed. The message of freedom is not mine, it is everyone’s. It is not new, it has been the perennial message since thousands of years ago. Anyone who is interested and sincere about their own true health, peace, and well-being can come to know this message. I simply hand the message over. Have it! It’s yours.
