How did you become interested in transformative life coaching, and what led you to pursue certification in this field?

I discovered coaching following burnout from a demanding legal career. The decline in my emotional well-being was gradual – I qualified as a solicitor in the 1990s and quickly progressed to partner and several leadership roles. I enjoyed my work, but I was always working at 150% capacity – trying to cram in as much as possible to be the best professional, spouse, parent and friend.

After my second daughter was born, I realized I wanted balance, purpose and a new perspective on life. I was completely worn out! So I left the corporate rat race and moved to France. After growing veggies for a few years and doing up a derelict farmhouse – I found coaching – or coaching found me! The more I learned about myself and my transformative journey, the more I wanted to know. For the first time, I felt truly connected with who I was and how I wanted to show up in the world.

What type of services do you offer?

I offer both in-person and online coaching packages to facilitate self-awareness, confidence and growth. That may touch any area of your life – personal or professional.

Because I work holistically, my coaching approach very much embraces our ‘whole’ being – mind, body, spirit and emotions – to explore values, needs and beliefs as an integral part of our desired outcomes.

I help clients achieve a deeper understanding of their sense of self, perceived roadblocks and true path through a transformative approach that connects every aspect of their life, enabling ‘inside-out’ change.

How do you approach creating a safe and supportive space for clients to explore and make positive life changes?

Building rapport, trust and a confidential environment, free of any judgment. Clients are the experts at their own lives, resourceful and whole. As coaches, we are constantly working on our own self-awareness too to be fully present and neutral. We meet our clients where they are.

My job is to provide that safe and supportive container in which clients can solve their own obstacles or challenges by examining areas they might not usually explore to achieve a desired objective.

In your experience, what are some common challenges or obstacles clients face when seeking transformative change, and how do you help them overcome those challenges?

Most of us have limiting beliefs that get in the way of our progress. Our brains constantly adapt to our changing life environments – but we all have ‘default’ behaviors that we have carried along with us for many, many years. That may include perfectionism, imposter syndrome, anxiety or low self-esteem for example.

Part of what we do together is to explore how to take positive steps that strengthen neural pathways, weaken beliefs that no longer serve the individual and replace unproductive habits with new behaviors. This enables positive change.

Can you describe your ethical approach as a transformative life coach and how you maintain professional boundaries with clients?

Ethics are fundamental to the coaching relationship. I have an Ethics Code on my site and have pledged legal and ethical obligations as an Accredited Associate Coach through the International Coaching Federation.

All ICF coaches must pass a rigorous credentialing examination – that comforts clients that they have met stringent education and experience requirements and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the coaching competencies that set the standard in the profession.

Last year’s ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study found that 85% of coaching clients say it’s important or very important that their coach holds a certification or credential. So yes, it’s essential and I adhere to strict ethical guidelines as part of ICF’s mission to protect and serve our coaching clients.

Can you share an example of a time when a client’s transformation surprised even you, and what impact did that have on your own coaching practice?

I worked with a client who was terrified of getting things wrong. They frequently felt judged and criticized by others and wished for more confidence in their abilities. They experienced low self-esteem and worried about making a fool of themselves and what people thought of them.

We explored deep-rooted automatic negative thought processes, self-judgment and believing wild assumptions to be factually true. Through our sessions, they started to identify and disrupt these thoughts and beliefs based on assumptions, not facts.

All events are neutral, and they started to realize that our minds associate positive or negative emotions based upon our interpretation of an event.

What became clear was that they had experienced a core belief of not being good enough throughout their lives. And this had emerged at a family event when they were seven years old. Once they unlocked the unconscious – and challenged this belief – we started working on how to release these self-worth assumptions and perceptions from the past.

As a coach, I often work to support clients who are going through challenging periods of transition and growth. And, as a human being, it can sometimes stir emotion in me too. And that’s where coaching supervision comes in – it ensures I work effectively, and ethically and remove blind spots that could otherwise create any unconscious bias from my side.
