This week, we had the opportunity to speak with Melissa Henyan – a Psychic Medium and Animal Intuitive. We learned more about how her career developed, what can a person expect from a session, and what she does to develop her skills.
When did you first know that being a psychic medium was your calling and how did it come about?
When did I know this was my calling? Oh my goodness that is a great question. My day job was in Marketing and my night gig was training horses and giving riding lessons. I thought I would quit my job and be a full-time clinician. Silly me! Plot Twist!
At first, I feared I was losing my mind. I believed I would be institutionalized if I told anyone what was happening. I recall feeling angry and alone. I doubted everything. Closing my eyes at night left me inundated with images I didn’t understand. Soon I was hearing and seeing things when I was awake. I could not make sense of it. Now I know clairaudience and clairvoyance, my natural-born abilities were waking up but then, I thought it was demonic.
In 2008/2009, I put my “crazy” self in therapy which would span almost two years of weekly visits. While in therapy, on November 6, 2010, my son Derek took his life. I wrote that story for a book called, “The Last Breath, True Stories of Mediumship”. If you have any interest in reading it, my story is Chapter 7.
Derek’s death opened me up to things that made the initial experiences feel like a day in a candy store. Past life traumas came into play! At that time, I had no idea issues from a past life were even a thing. Let me just say, my emotions were raw. Therapy helped me deal with my emotions instead of hiding from them. Derek’s death made me reevaluate everything. Fast forward many years, I do collaborate with my deceased son. He’s been instrumental in my development as a medium. He even pops in to help with readings.
Through all of this, I realized something beautiful. I was to take my experiences and mediumship and help others. This is my true calling. I know I can use my story to assist others with their grief, their fears and even assist them in learning to shine their own light.
What is the most popular type of reading that customers are looking for? What are the most common concerns that interest them?
My most scheduled reading is psychic. The most common questions concern career, family life, and children. I am frequently asked whether “they” are on their correct path.
Spirit has shown me that merely being alive is being on our path. Think of the earth as a school where our learning can take us in a myriad of directions. We learn through the most difficult things we’ve experienced.
We can also have those lessons in a softer gentler way. If we make the tough decisions upfront, it can make the journey a little smoother.
Unfortunately, when we put off the tough decisions we only prolong the decision, it doesn’t remove it. Spirit has shown me over and over how important it is to stop waffling on the decision. Make your decision and then apply energy towards your goal and grow.
Some of the psychic sessions are still performed in person. What about you? How has your work been affected by the pandemic?
Just weeks before I even heard the word Covid, I was already being redirected. Two avenues I utilized were seemingly ripped out from under me.
Out of the blue, I received a message from the facility manager where I gave in-person sessions telling me the center had been given notice stating they could no longer have anyone use the facility for business purposes.
The following week, the radio station where I was co-hosting a weekly show for almost two years was abruptly ended for lack of station support. Within two weeks, I lost my facility and the weekly show. This forced me to re-evaluate my life.
Covid then forced more closures. Since most of my sessions were already online so I decided to really develop my social media.
Now I offer in-person sessions on my front porch so that we can still be outside and separated but people still get that one-on-one connection that many crave over video chat.
In this field, it is often thought that word-of-mouth and personal recommendations are the most important when picking a psychic reader – is this true?
Absolutely! Most of my clients find me through word of mouth. It’s much easier to trust a friend who has had a good experience.
What can a person expect from a session with you?
When you first come into a session, my job is to help you feel comfortable. As an empath I feel your emotions so if I start finding myself getting fidgety or nervous, I will bring you into breathwork.
During a psychic session, I often pick up life traumas that need to be healed. I will be pulled to the corresponding chakras or areas of the body where the trauma is being stored. I might feel specific ages where a client will need to release emotions to heal.
We humans are surprisingly good at stuffing our emotions. I believe that’s mostly because we don’t know how to move through the pain. I feel it’s important to help others understand they can move through it. Sometimes I’m guided to help clear that energy. If I’m not guided to assist in clearing, I will send the clients to someone I feel can assist them.
Shadow work comes up often in my psychic sessions and that is due to the energy we’re experiencing in our world right now. There is a huge release of the old taking place. The old, the negative, the past, wants to be healed.
For a mediumship session, I open and ask the spirit to step forward and share their messages, their validations, the information that they hold dear to them. Spirit knows what they’re doing so my job is to get out of the way.
Some of the information I bring forward may not make sense right away so I do take notes and send those notes to the client. For instance, in 2017 a client’s brother Mike came through with her deceased mom. My client stated she did not have a brother in Spirit, nor did she have a brother by that name. Okay! Yikes. Let’s write this down!
Fast forward to 2019. The client reaches back out to me to let me know she was contacted by a young woman claiming to be her niece. My client’s mom had given up a son for adoption before she was born. That child was Mike. His daughter, her niece, found her through DNA testing.
(I have their stories posted on my website.)
Was there anything that you felt you needed to do to deepen or develop your psychic abilities?
Yes! I practiced with anyone who gave me the chance. I would spend hours every night after work giving as many readings as I could.
I have taken many classes with amazing teachers. Continuing education is a must in any field. I have taken classes from Arthur Findlay Tutors, Mavis Patilla, Andy Bing, and Colin Bates.
I attend as many lectures as I can. Most memorable events have been with Thomas John, James Van Praagh, John Edward, Collette Baron Reid, Sonia Choquette, Teal Swan, and Abraham. I have taken a few classes on Psychic Detective training with Alyson Gannon and another course with Pam Coronado. Right now, I’m studying to receive certification to teach meditation.
Learning and growing are never-ending. There’s always another piece to our puzzle, something we can learn to help us help ourselves and others.
