Can you please introduce yourself to our readers and share a few details about your professional background?
My name is Kumi. I am a licensed massage therapist and an energy facilitator, certified in Aura Reading, Reiki, and the Family Systemic Constellations. I am Japanese, born in the US, and raised in three countries including in India. As a child, processing multiple moral systems was not easy. I developed an inner world of spirituality as a survival mechanism. This was happening on an unconscious level.
My spiritual journey started after I visited a medium in Brazil. When I was in my massage school, I heard an instructor talk about her experience there. It made me very curious and I went to meet him. After returning from Brazil, kundalini awakening started. Kundalini awakening is an energy attack that happens through the opening of chakras. It was very scary and I didn’t know what kundalini awakening was. I went to many spiritual places to get help.
I live in Manhattan, there are many places to go. I found out that there are as many spiritual groups as restaurants in New York. As street vendors to Michelin-star restaurants, they were in small apartment rooms at big institutions such as St. Patrick’s Church. And from different regions, too. Judeo-Christian, Indian, Tibetan, Native American, etc. I got confused and nothing really helped. But I learned a lot about spiritual communities.
One day I received an email about an aura reading retreat. I didn’t know what aura meant and I didn’t care about reading auras but the descriptions looked like it might help my energy attacks. And it did, and reading auras was fun. So I decided to continue it and become an aura reader.
Can you walk me through an aura reading?
An aura is a bubble-shaped energy field that surrounds our bodies and each person has certain unique vibrations. It contains all information about one’s being including past lives. By connecting to this vibration (your auras) it shows me different kinds of images in my closed eyes. These images are insightful. It talks to you in a personal way and articulates what is happening in your inner world.
What I say are things you already know, but hearing it from the reader makes it a validation and confirmation. The experience is vivid and healing.
The healing part comes from seeing yourself as a third person objectively. This phenomenon is similar to the Vedantic practice called Drg Drgsya Viveka. You see yourself and situations as facts without being judgemental of yourself. It gives immediate relief.
The best time to receive aura readings is when you are trying to change your situation but not knowing how. These things often happen when your mind is saying one thing and your heart is saying another. Usually, the heart is right.
What is the concept behind Ko-an and what can people expect from a Ko-an Spiritual Q&A Session?
Ko-an is a Zen terminology. I think people have heard about Zen koans. It’s a Q & A between Zen disciples and the master to attain enlightenment. I come from a Japanese Rinzai Zen family and Ko-an could also mean Guidance by Kumi. So I named it Ko-an Spiritual Q&A Session.
Ko-an is offered for spiritual seekers. Once you enter a spiritual world, you start to question everything. You don’t know what to do, where to go, and who to ask. You can get stuck very easily on your own. I will walk the path together with you safely by listening, answering questions, by the knowledge of the laws of energy and different maps of the spiritual worlds, and you will be given homework. You shall get the answer to your question after 3~4 sessions. We usually meet once a month.
Ko-an sessions were started with my massage clients. Many clients come to see me for massages to talk and ask questions. As my rates increased over the years, many of them discontinued seeing me but they still wanted to talk to me. So I created a “Talk to Kumi” “Guidance by Kumi ” session with a reasonable rate. Now it has become more for spiritual seekers who are trying to find their ways.
You also offer Energy Body Work and Massage services. What can you tell me about that part of your work?
My main income is from massage practice. I specialize in Post Surgical Massage. Because of my massage practice, I look at human bodies including auras scientifically. Reading auras is not god power. We all can do it by using a part of muscle in the brain. It’s another way of communication. We use only 10% of our brain and we know only 10% about the universe. Spirituality is science. Religion is politics. In schools, we are taught only about the power of politics and were never taught about the source of energy which is the power emerged from the divine. When you receive my massage session, you will experience all these through my hands. I offer a combination of Manual Lymph Drainage, Myofascial Release, and Japanese body works including Reiki. And you don’t need to be a post-op patient.
What is your favorite part of your profession?
I love everything about my profession… except scheduling. Lol
In aura readings, there is a rush of bliss when I see the real places or situations from what I saw in the readings. In Ko-an sessions, I love when clients get Ah-ha moments, find the divine within themselves, when synchronicity happens, and see them transform.
Here’s my favorite quote from Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee a Sufi mystic.
“Every human being has a unique note to play in the symphony of life. When it’s played, it makes the most beautiful contribution that nobody else can make, because each person is a unique creation by the divine.”
My mission is to help find each person’s unique note that is given by the divine and let one play in the grand symphony of life.
What would you say is the most important bit of knowledge you share in Ko-an sessions?
After going through a kundalini awakening, reading auras, and being a seeker myself, I studied and practiced different kinds of spiritual teachings for several years and one day everything became clear. I came up with my own safe way to walk the paradox of the spiritual world.
The main spiritual teachings I practiced (and still practicing now) are Advata Vetanta by Swami Sarvapriyananda, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee of the Golden Sufi. During my kundalini years which lasted 5~7 years, I watched almost all videos of “Buddha at the Gas Pump” interviewed by Rick Archer. What I learned from Rick’s conversations was tremendous!
From the scientific view, I am keen on the neuroscience of two hemispheres of the brains from Jill Bolte Taylor and Iain McGilchrist. Another important philosopher and historian is Yuval Noah Harari. Their wisdom helps us to see where our misunderstanding and conditioning came from and enables us to think with our own minds.
