MysticMag finds out more.

Katie, how did you first become interested in Feng Shui, and what inspired you to start the Wind Horse School of Feng Shui?

In 1998, I was working at a publishing company, surrounded by cubicles in a rather depressing environment. I had never heard of Feng Shui at the time, but I began to sense that it would be exciting to transform business spaces into more positive, uplifting environments. Intuitively, I understood that if a workspace felt better, employees would not only be happier but also more productive, ultimately benefiting the company’s bottom line.
Intrigued by this idea, I started exploring interior design, and one day, while browsing a bookstore in Austin, I came across The Western Guide to Feng Shui by Terah Kathryn Collins. I sat there, engrossed, reading almost the entire book before taking it home to try it out in my own space. The results were immediate and profound, and from that moment on, I was hooked.

Can you explain the core principles of the Tibetan Buddhist Black Hat (BTB) tradition of Feng Shui and how they differ from other Feng Shui practices?

The Black Hat version of Feng Shui is a modern derivative of the classical, compass-based approach, focusing on the psychology of space and the power of intention. Instead of aligning the Bagua map according to cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), it is oriented to the front door of a space. These are the key distinctions between Black Hat Feng Shui and its traditional counterpart.

What are some common misconceptions people have about Feng Shui, and how do you address these in your teachings and consultations?

Many people dismiss Feng Shui as superstitious without realizing how profoundly a space can affect us. My approach is simple: don’t knock it until you try it. Even applying basic Feng Shui principles—like decluttering or improving your front entrance—can make a difference. I guarantee that whether you believe in it or not, once you give it a try, you’ll notice shifts in your life. This happens because by altering your physical space, you’re creating an energetic shift, and naturally, your life starts to follow suit.

How does the Feng Shui Odyssey program facilitate personal transformation for its students, and what can participants expect from the certification process?

The Odyssey is a nine-month program where I work with participants both individually and in a group setting, allowing them to experience Feng Shui over time with my guidance. My intention with this program is for people to reach a new level of self-discovery while gaining a deeper understanding of universal principles. It equips them with lifelong tools and awareness they can apply to their lives. The program distills everything I’ve learned over the years into an accessible format, allowing participants to implement these teachings in their own lives, supported by the encouragement and inspiration of the group.
Not only do participants engage with their own Feng Shui practice, but they also witness the journeys of others, creating a rich learning environment. As an add-on to The Odyssey, there’s the option to pursue certification through weekend intensives throughout the year. This allows participants to not only master Feng Shui for themselves but also gain the skills to become certified consultants, enabling them to help others with Feng Shui as well.

In your experience, how does Feng Shui influence a person’s life beyond their immediate environment? Can you share any success stories or examples of transformative changes you’ve witnessed?

When someone chooses to practice Feng Shui, they’re essentially asking where they have blocks in their life and how they can remove them to thrive, prosper, and create the life of their dreams. Yes, you’ll leave a Feng Shui session with a space that feels better, but it goes much deeper than that. For example, if a single woman comes to me seeking a lifelong partnership, I examine her home for subtle “clues” that may be keeping her single. Often, I find items like gifts from ex-boyfriends, artwork depicting solitary figures, or even single items that are typically paired, like salt and pepper shakers. These objects may symbolically reinforce her current state.
Once we identify these representations of the issue, we make adjustments that align with her desires. For instance, replacing artwork of a single woman with a depiction of a pair—such as two ducks, which mate for life—or a classic piece like “The Kiss,” sets the intention for partnership. By shifting what’s in her space, her psyche takes note, and this starts building momentum toward what she wants. One of my colleagues, Carol Olstead, likens the home to a 3D vision board: whatever is in your space is actively shaping your reality. If what surrounds you doesn’t reflect your desires or embody high energy, you’re essentially depleting yourself.
The process can be playful and revealing. If someone seeks more prosperity, there are often physical signs of financial blocks in their home—like broken items that haven’t been repaired, symbolizing a scarcity mindset. These objects reinforce the feeling of not having enough time or money. Feng Shui can address even the small things, like the popular belief that leaving the toilet seat open can drain your finances. This idea connects to the flow of “chi” or energy in a space—since toilets have a strong downward energy, leaving the lid open can symbolically “flush away” your resources. Money, after all, is just another form of energy, and managing the flow of energy in your home reflects your intentions for abundance and well-being.
