Joy Fraser teaches and practices Reiki in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. She is a UK Reiki Federation Master/Teacher training in Usui Reiki and a Melody Crystal Practitioner. MysticMag finds out more.
What is the most significant role that Reiki has had in your life?
Reiki has made me a calmer, more relaxed and positive person. After my Reiki Level one I was unsure on whether the Reiki was having any effect on my life, to the point that when I went to do my Reiki Level Two I said to my teacher that I had no idea what I was doing there – the Reiki I practice has a positive effect on everybody else, but it wasn’t helping my back pain which is why I started doing Reiki in the first place.
He then asked me if I was speaking or thinking differently. I then realized that I had become a much calmer person and reflected on my reactions to certain events that were happening in my life at the time. My teacher explained that the Reiki works on what it deems to be the most important first – clearly in my case, my head and not my back!
What would you describe the core benefits of Reiki to be, for both you and your students/clients?
It helps a lot with mental health. It helps to calm people down and to relax them. It also helps with pain relief. The energy always goes where it is required and not necessarily where the clients tell me it needs to go. Sometimes they may not say what a particular issue is. When they return they usually say that an issue is no longer bothering them and then ask if I can help with another. People who learn reiki with me often say how much more positive they have become.
What can you tell us about your work with crystals?
I use crystals less than I do Reiki. I completed the Melody Crystal course which took place over a weekend. The course, in my opinion, should have been a lot longer than the two days because the power of crystals is overwhelming and quite frankly daunting.
After the course, I practiced on friends of mine. One of my friends was absolutely convinced that I had hypnotized her and was wondering how on earth I could have learnt that in simply two days. During the session, my friend went back to something that had happened in a past life and this experience had frightened her. I then knew that if I was working on somebody with mental health issues, this could spark off all sorts of trouble, so I decided from that point on to only use the crystals on the chakra points while working with Reiki.
I certainly don’t force crystals on people but they are always available if they ask for them. Similarly, I never do a session with only crystals, but prefer to combine an hour-long session of Reiki with the use of specific crystals.
After the course my reiki teacher had a course on crystals and that gave me so much more information. I remember being in his garden with a pendulum. I had to find where a bottle of oil was. I was standing in front of a tree when my teacher appeared. I told him the pendulum said it was in this tree, but I could not see it. He pointed to a branch above me, and there it was!
How do you ascertain which crystals to use on whom and where?
I use a pendulum. Each chakra has a color that relates to it and I will usually take out a couple of crystals per chakra and go through them using the pendulum and find out which crystals are best suited for the client. Once I put them on the person’s body I will consult with the pendulum again to see if we are still on the right track with the crystals. 99.9% of the time, the pendulum will confirm my choice, but very occasionally I will have to change one of the crystals, depending on the pendulum’s outcome.
Joy has published a book called The Power of Reiki, Crystals and Synchronicity, which is available on Amazon.
How do you work with your clients and how many sessions do you recommend they have?
Usually, people phone me first and we have a long conversation to start with. When the person arrives, they fill out an indemnity form. I never have back to back clients so people are able to talk to me after the session, discussing how they felt during the therapy session and asking questions etc… I do practice Reiki remotely but I will only do attunements on a hands-on basis.
I always rely on my clients to come back to see me when they need to or feel the need to. I never force someone to come monthly or other – it is in the hands of each of my clients.
