With over three decades of experience in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, can you share the key insights and lessons you’ve gained throughout your yoga journey, and how those experiences have shaped your approach as a practitioner and instructor?
I began practicing yoga at the age of 14, so the ideas I had about yoga then were quite different from what I hold now at 52. Yoga has been a major force in my life, emphasizing the importance of caring for our bodies as the vehicles we inhabit. However, I’ve come to realize that the state of our minds and thought processes holds even greater significance in determining our quality of life. As I’ve delved deeper into yoga, I’ve shifted my focus towards its internal aspects. Yoga philosophy teaches that our inner world—our minds, hearts, and thoughts—profoundly influences the world around us. While physical health is vital, our mental and emotional well-being ultimately shapes our happiness and fulfillment.
We often deceive ourselves with narratives of external conditions dictating our happiness, such as job status, income, or possessions. Pursuing external goals is necessary, but when our happiness depends solely on these factors, we’re susceptible to a rollercoaster of emotions. Yoga, as a spiritual practice, has been invaluable in navigating life’s challenges. My main insight is that nurturing our internal world surpasses external pursuits. While we must attend to both, focusing solely on external achievements leaves us vulnerable to fluctuations in circumstances. As the Bhagavad Gita teaches, dedicating ourselves to higher ideals and performing our duties sincerely without attachment to outcomes brings enduring contentment.
As the director of Ashtanga Yoga Studio, how do you create a supportive and inclusive environment for practitioners at various levels, from beginners to advanced students?
One of my fundamental approaches, imparted by a past teacher, is to embrace each individual with unconditional positive regard. Regardless of fitness level, age, or background, viewing each person as a divine soul fosters a compassionate teaching environment. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of each practitioner, I aim to meet them where they are on their journey—whether joyful or struggling, physically or emotionally. Over my three decades of teaching, I’ve learned immensely from my students, emphasizing the importance of non-judgmental support and sincere compassion. Building belief in oneself and cultivating self-confidence through yoga practice is pivotal to success in all facets of life. By extending kindness, compassion, and encouragement, I strive to empower individuals to believe in themselves and embark on their transformative yoga journey.
What type of services do you offer?
I offer public yoga classes catering to all levels, alongside a comprehensive range of online training programs, including a 200-hour yoga teacher training. These programs are accessible globally, accommodating participants from diverse backgrounds. My work extends to two interconnected websites: Mysore Yoga Traditions, which explores the history and evolution of yoga, and an upcoming documentary series titled “Kings and Yoga,” delving into the socio-political context of yoga’s development. Through live lectures and a vast archive of resources, I aim to enrich the understanding of yoga philosophy and techniques. Additionally, I organize events like the Mysore Yoga Conference and the Melkote Immersion, blending yoga practice with cultural exploration. Locally, in Oklahoma, I operate two studios—Magic Forest and Yoga on Main—offering public classes, Thai bodywork, and yoga therapy services. I conduct workshops internationally, fostering a global community of yoga practitioners and enthusiasts.
The Mysore Yoga Traditions Film is a noteworthy project. Can you discuss the inspiration behind creating this film and the impact you hope it will have on the global perception of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga?
The inspiration for the Mysore Yoga Traditions film stemmed from my desire to explore the rich history and lineage of yoga, particularly Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. With over three decades of practice, I sought to understand the origins and evolution of the discipline that has profoundly influenced my life. Initially conceived as a tribute to my teacher, Sri BKS Iyengar, the project evolved into a comprehensive exploration of Mysore’s yoga heritage. Despite initial challenges, serendipitous encounters granted access to invaluable resources, including interviews with esteemed scholars and access to historical archives. The film aims to unveil the depth and breadth of Mysore’s contribution to yoga, transcending its physical aspects to encompass spirituality, philosophy, and cultural significance. By shedding light on Mysore’s scholarly tradition and royal patronage, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation and understanding of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga’s roots, fostering a more holistic perception within the global yoga community.
Your passion for yoga is evident in your long-standing commitment to the practice. How do you maintain your enthusiasm and continue evolving as a practitioner and teacher after so many years in the field?
My journey with yoga has traversed various phases, each contributing to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the practice. Yoga, to me, is akin to a daily ritual like showering—it’s indispensable for maintaining my well-being and navigating life’s challenges. While my enthusiasm for conquering advanced postures may have waned, my love for yoga has matured and diversified over time. Embracing yoga as a lifestyle, I continually seek to integrate its principles into every aspect of my existence, fostering growth and transformation. Gratitude for the profound teachings of yoga fuels my ongoing quest for knowledge and self-discovery. Recognizing the boundless depth of yoga, I humbly acknowledge my role as a lifelong student, constantly evolving alongside my practice and sharing its invaluable lessons with others.
