In an enlightening interview with MysticMag, Sharon Farber shares her inspiring journey from massage therapy to mediumship, driven by a passion to connect people with their loved ones in spirit.
Her transformative experiences at Arthur Findlay College have shaped her ability to bring peace to the grieving and teach others to develop their mediumship skills. Through her intimate retreats and spiritually influenced art, Farber creates sacred spaces for healing and growth.
Her books, Choosing to Be a Medium and the forthcoming Trance Mediumship: The Next Step, embody her mission to share the profound impact of mediumship with the world.
What motivated your transition from massage therapy to mediumship?
Providing massage and energy healing was deeply fulfilling and made me feel helpful and appreciated. However, with so many massage therapists in the world, my contribution wasn’t essential. Mediumship, on the other hand, is my passion! I realized I could bring greater healing by connecting people with their loved ones in spirit than by relieving physical tension or offering Reiki.
Mediumship brings peace to the grieving and can ease fears around death. It’s especially powerful for those dealing with sudden or tragic losses such as suicide or overdose, helping them release guilt, find closure, and rediscover joy.
More importantly, I teach mediumship. While there are only so many readings I can give, teaching allows me to amplify the healing. I’ve trained hundreds of beginners and developing mediums, and many go on to help others. I work remotely over Zoom, so my reach is wide. Mediumship development transforms the mediums, not just the people who receive readings, so that’s a lot of healing!
How has studying at Arthur Findlay College influenced your mediumship practice?
I’ve attended Arthur Findlay College four times for week-long courses, and each visit addressed the specific needs I had at the time. My first trip in 2012 felt like coming home; it affirmed that I was meant to pursue mediumship.
The following visits supported my growth in evidential mediumship, strengthened my public demonstrations, and inspired me to explore trance mediumship. Each course was transformative, and my tutors were wonderful.
What can participants expect from your mediumship development retreats?
My retreats offer students the chance to fully immerse themselves in mediumship while stepping away from the distractions of daily life. We gather in naturally beautiful, healing spaces designed for sacred journeys, where students can connect with nature, enjoy wholesome meals they don’t have to cook, and bond with like-minded souls.
Retreats are limited to 12 students, so there’s plenty of personal attention and lots of practice. It’s an ideal, supportive environment for growth.
I recently added an “observer” option for those who are curious but not yet ready to dive into developing their mediumship. Observers can participate as much or as little as they’d like, enjoy the energy of the group, and receive readings from students. Often, observers decide to become students.
How do your artistic pursuits complement your healing and mediumship work?
Creativity and healing go hand-in-hand. I began painting dragonflies and hummingbirds before I realized they were seen as symbols of transition or messengers from the other side. Over time, my art shifted from detailed realism to spiritually influenced art, which was more like meditation.
Sometimes I sketch spirit contacts during online mediumship development circles. I could use a bit more help from the spirit world with those portraits, but they’re part of my process. Art, like mediumship, is a way of opening and listening.
What challenges did you face while writing Choosing to Be a Medium?
Writing, Choosing to Be a Medium wasn’t my idea. I was strongly nudged to do so by the spirit world, but I also thought the message was important. I felt guided and supported every step of the way. The only challenge came in finding a literary agent and a traditional publisher, and I miraculously succeeded at both. The entire process, from concept to publication, felt like it was meant to be. I’m sure I had more than a little help from loved ones in spirit.
My next book, tentatively titled Trance Mediumship: The Next Step, will be published by Llewellyn Worldwide in early 2026, with Dreamscape Publishing producing the audiobook. It was much easier to write after everything I learned from my first book.
How do you assist individuals in developing their own mediumship abilities?
I teach with an “if I can do it, so can you” attitude. I didn’t wake up one day connecting with spirit people; I chose to develop as a medium. That makes me especially equipped to teach others.
I start with the basics: what mediumship is (and isn’t), how it works, and how to manage fear or doubt. Then we move into the “how-to,” including preparation, grounding, raising vibration, evidence, messages, and ethics. I emphasize practice and the importance of giving readings as the only real way to develop. Reading books and watching videos are helpful, but you must do mediumship.
I hold my students’ hands through their first readings and share their joy when they connect. While I specialize in teaching beginners, I also mentor developing mediums who want to deepen their abilities, build confidence, and feel supported on their journey.
