Given your extensive experience in both teaching and counseling, how do you believe your background in education informs your approach to therapy, particularly when working with children and adolescents?
I find that due to my teaching background I am better able to build rapport with children and adolescents. It has helped me better understand their developmental stages and makes it easier for me to plan activities when I have to do psychoeducation. Because I have an art teaching background as well, I am able to reach many children through art.
Can you share a specific example from your practice where you successfully integrated bioenergetics into a treatment plan? How did this approach benefit your client?
I use bioenergetics often in therapy for many reasons. The benefits are especially found when clients are experiencing somatic symptoms. We often carry the energy of emotions and trauma in our body and it manifests as physical pain or tension. I have countless examples of releasing knee pain, back pain, hip pain, stomach pain, stiff neck etc by using bioenergetics. I have several clients who have fibromyalgia and will come in with an increase in pain in different areas of their body. Sometimes a single session will improve their pain level if not fully take it away.
What type of services do you offer?
I myself offer psychotherapy as well as emotion/body/belief code. I am trained in EMDR and work with people who have experienced trauma. At my wellness center we also offer complimentary services to therapy such as Reiki, functional medicine, sound therapy, herbalism, Oxygen Advantage breath training, and a mind body membership with classes including yoga, ecstatic dance, meditative movement, meditative art and Tai Chi.
As someone who works with at-risk children, what strategies do you employ to establish trust and rapport with your clients, especially those who may be resistant to therapy?
With children it is easiest to establish trust and rapport through play. With adolescent children, I find building rapport happens when you show an interest in them and their life. Similar to adults, most adolescent children just want to feel heard and validated. I will often use question cards that we both answer as we get to know each other.
Given your holistic and eclectic approach to therapy, how do you ensure that your treatment plans remain personalized and tailored to each individual’s unique needs?
Because I have training in many modalities, some traditional and some not, I am better able to personalize my sessions depending on what the client needs in the moment. There are some things I do with every client like resourcing, so they are able to cope with whatever emotions come up in and out of therapy but in general every session is unique and tailored to the client. There are many days when what I planned for the day changes due to what the client brings to the session.
As someone who has transitioned from teaching to counseling, what aspects of your teaching experience do you find most beneficial in your current role as a therapist? I think teaching has brought a unique skill to the counseling sessions.
While traditional talk therapy has benefits and I use it, I like more action modalities and I would contribute that to my teaching background. I often do psychoeducation so clients are educated in what is happening to them and why. I have had many clients who have gone to other therapists prior to me and never were taught a coping skill or had any education on the biology of anxiety and I feel that is essential in my sessions. I not only like to help people I like to teach. I guess, once a teacher always a teacher.
