What prompted your transition from real estate to health and wellness, including obtaining certifications as a personal trainer and nutrition specialist?

My shift in career was triggered by a layoff from my corporate job after 12 years in real estate financial consulting. The challenging real estate market led to my termination at the end of 2011. Although I felt a mix of relief and excitement for what lay ahead, I also experienced fear, finding myself unexpectedly unemployed with over a decade of industry expertise and limited job prospects. This situation prompted me to pursue two passions: fitness and food.

I obtained a certification in personal training with a focus on fitness nutrition while simultaneously working with a start-up offering premade paleo meals. During this period, my understanding of food and nutrition grew, revealing the healing potential of food. Personal successes and concern for loved ones relying on prescription medication inspired me to establish my coaching practice. This passion for optimizing health ultimately led to my National Board Certification for Health and Wellness Coaching.

Can you provide an example of how your health and fitness approach helped you overcome a chronic ailment?

For years, I battled chronic sinus drainage and eczema. I managed the eczema with topical creams and tolerated the sinus drainage, avoiding nasal sprays recommended by my doctor. While collaborating with a paleo chef, the sinus issues became unbearable, leading to a challenge. Aware of my habitual breakfast of granola and Greek yogurt, the chef suggested eliminating the yogurt for two weeks. Accepting the challenge, I documented the experience in a blog post.

Surprisingly, within the first week, the sinus drainage disappeared, and the eczema flare-ups ceased without the need for topical creams. Additionally, I discovered a reduction in bloating. This experience underscored the profound impact of food on our bodies, turning me into a conscious eater.

How do you tailor your coaching to address each client’s unique needs and health journey?
In my practice, the client always takes the lead. While clients may initially seek assistance with a specific health aspect, I prioritize their evolving needs. If during a session they identify another area requiring attention, that becomes our focus. It’s about meeting the client where they are at that moment.

What fundamental principles shape your health and wellness coaching?

My coaching is grounded in empathy, intentional listening, authenticity, vulnerability, and a commitment to living in my purpose.

How do your personal interests in yoga, hiking, tennis, and outdoor activities influence your coaching philosophy?

My personal interests serve as a relatable foundation, fostering initial connections with clients. This relatability builds trust, encouraging clients to open up and share authentically, forming a genuine coaching relationship beyond expertise.

Can you share a success story from your coaching practice that highlights your positive impact on a client’s cognitive health or overall well-being?

A remarkable success story involves a skeptical 76-year-old client with no gym experience. Despite her initial reservations, she entrusted me as her personal trainer. Over a short period, she witnessed physical strength improvement, developed a growth mindset, and demonstrated consistency in actions and thoughts. These positive changes extended beyond the gym, emphasizing that age is just a number and it’s never too late to embark on a new journey.
