Find out how Martin Sebastian Moritz, an astrologer and couple psychotherapist, based in Berlin, helps his clients to unlock their inner wisdom and help them to find ways to embrace their unique journeys. Martin empowers his clients by showing them how to be more kind and patient with themselves. After all, we don’t only live once, and one incarnation can never be enough to tackle all our complex karmic issues. Best, take it one step after the other, however tiny they are. And even when we think that we don’t make progress, we explore more and more who we are and what role the people in our lives play in this process, which demands resilience and courage. For Martin, Astrology and Psychotherapy can be an ideal combination, because they complement each other.

What did your professional journey look like, and how did you get into this field?
I started out as an actor and dancer. But when I was in my mid-twenties, I realized that this creative and inspiring, but also very competitive and hectic life was putting too much pressure on my very sensitive soul. So, I decided to change horses and looked for more holistic and fulfilling ways to earn a living. I studied psychology and began training in many fields of psychotherapy; psychodrama and couple therapy, to name the two most rewarding. My interest in astrology had already started when I was a teenager, but it had always been rather a hobby and a means for exploring myself and significant others. This interest became more and more intense and at one point I started to give readings and then to teach. When I lived in the UK, I attended lectures and realized that this was what I also wanted to do. So, I began to teach on a larger scale, in German and in English. Over the years I have formed precious relationships with experts, schools, and conferences all over the world and I get invited to lecture in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia, which gives me so much joy. Astrology is a uniting power and brings you into contact with amazing people. These days I am expanding my audience with my YouTube channel with German and English content.
You come from a psychological angle, but you can also work with a more esoteric approach when you do an astrological reading. Can you elaborate on this?
A chart can be interpreted in different ways, depending on the astrologer and their approach. The karmic approach offers fascinating ways of trying to make sense of the most pressing issues in our present lives. The Moon’s nodes in their signs and houses give a general idea of which journey the native embarks on in their present incarnation. Which experiences do we bring into this life and which experiences are we to learn and focus on? Retrograde planets indicate which facets of the personality might need a longer and more complex process to integrate. The pre-natal, also called karmic new moon chart gives further information about what karmic lessons are to be learned by the native. I often combine the psychological view with the karmic one to give a richer and more challenging interpretation of the chart. Over the many years I have become more self-confident in my ability to trace key issues and challenges in a chart. Every client enriches my repertoire and brings the complex Astrological language of symbols to life, which keeps me on my journey. The great thing about astrology for me is that I always keep on learning. It has so much to offer and is a great source of inspiration and comfort in my life. I have never spent a dull moment with astrology.
Are there other astrological issues you specialize in?
Most of my clients are female. They want to know about different aspects in their chart, such as career, family, but also love and sexuality. To focus on a topic, which is very dear to me; I specialize in the different aspects of femininity, represented by the Moon, Venus and Lilith, the black moon, a sensitive point. Femininity has become such a sensitive issue, because women (and men) begin to get in touch with their repressed needs and facets. It is difficult being a woman today, because there are still taboos, which make women feel ashamed of themselves. The same holds true for men and their Yin-sides, whether they are straight, bisexual, or gay. It is often the case that a woman has only lived out certain facets of her ‘inner woman’, while she has blocked others. An astrological reading can shed light on the hence unlived potential of female power, independence, and joy.
How does couple therapy and astrology overlap in your life?
I sometimes use astrology in my psychotherapy practice because psychotherapy and astrology can complement each other brilliantly. An individual chart already gives plenty of hints as to what kind of partner a native might attract and which issues will most probably be touched. When you bring two charts together, a technique called synastry, the issues become clearer and more significant. I can see where the couple ‘clicks’ and where the attraction lies. Of course, I also need their biographic narratives; relationships with their parents, siblings, former partners, and so forth. If you then consider the current planetary influences, called transits, you get more information as to which areas of their lives are affected and which transitions lay ahead. The therapy process can be rocky and painful at times, but also tremendously rewarding, both for the clients and for myself. There is a celestial body called Chiron, which symbolizes our wounds in the chart, and this often plays an important role in a relationship, because it is all about intimacy which unfolds when both partners are brave enough to show each other their wounds and vulnerabilities. That way they can comfort each other, and their wounds can heal. There is also a technique called Composite, which brings two horoscopes together and creates a couple chart which gives further information, but one needs the exact birth times for this.

In my webinars, which can be bought in my shop on my website, I am elaborating on certain aspects in a chart. My favorite topics are Chiron, the wounded healer; Saturn, the ‘Guardian of the Threshold’, and Neptune, the planet which stands for dreams and illusions. We are living in a world, in which we are seduced to invent ourselves in social media and dating apps, which often brings on the disappointment of realizing that reality is gray and uninspiring. But yet, there is a contra-trend, which I can see not only in older people, but also in generation Z, which is the yearning for authenticity and relationships which are built on honesty and reliability. I love meeting young people because they give me so much hope. The world is so fragile and we need to connect with each other over the generations, otherwise we will never make it..
Can you share a few details about your work as an author?
I’ve written a book about a section in the horoscope, the 8th house, which deals with taboos, the underworld, entanglements, passions, death, and reincarnation. It is called ‘Pandora’s Box – The mysterious 8th house’ and which includes fascinating case studies of personalities like Jane Goodall, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Truman Capote, John Dee, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, RuPaul or Adolf Eichmann. It also contains a detailed chapter about every planet in the 8th house and rulership factors, as well as transits to the 8th house. At the moment I am writing a book about the Moon and its influence on mother issues in the chart.
