What can you tell us about your personal journey – spiritual and emotional – that has led you to where you are today?
In 2014, my life took an unexpected turn when I experienced my first panic attack. As someone who had always approached life with a practical and scientific mindset, the concept of a holistic approach was completely foreign to me. However, as the panic attacks persisted and gave way to general anxiety, depression, and tinnitus, I realized I needed to explore alternative methods of healing.
During that challenging period, I found myself standing at a crossroads. The weight of my struggles became overwhelming, and thoughts of suicide entered my mind. But deep within, I knew I had a greater purpose as a mother to two young children. It was this realization that compelled me to seek a path of healing that didn’t involve relying solely on medication.
Having witnessed the side effects of strong antidepressants through my work in a care home, I felt compelled to find a different solution. That’s when I discovered the world of holistic healing. Among the various modalities, reflexology resonated with me on a profound level. I sensed an inner calling to explore this practice further.
With no prior experience, I began exploring hand reflexology as a means to alleviate my symptoms. To my surprise, I discovered that it had a remarkable effect on calming my anxiety and even helped to reduce the intensity of my tinnitus. This personal experience deepened my belief in the power of holistic therapies and set me on a transformative journey of self-healing and growth.
Reflexology is known to promote relaxation and stress reduction, but how does the stimulation of specific reflex points on the feet or hands actually influence the corresponding organs or systems in the body? Are there any neurobiological mechanisms or pathways that explain this connection?
The question of how reflexology works does not have a simple answer. There are several theories that attempt to explain its mechanisms. One prominent theory focuses on fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds and supports various structures in the body. According to this theory, stimulating reflex points in the feet sends impulses to corresponding parts of the body through the fascia.
Another important aspect is the concept of meridian lines from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Reflexologists trained in this aspect often utilize meridian knowledge to understand their clients’ conditions and facilitate changes in the body.
Additionally, reflexology has been found to have an impact on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for promoting relaxation and regulating vital processes like heart rate, adrenaline release, and digestion. By inducing a state of relaxation, reflexology treatment can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the “rest and digest” system.
Exciting research is currently underway in the field of reflexology. In particular, a study conducted by Kevin Kuntz involving thousands of brain scans using MRI technology during reflexology treatment is eagerly awaited by reflexologists. These findings may provide further insights into the science behind reflexology.
In the coming years, as more research is conducted and new discoveries are made, we may gain a deeper understanding of the scientific mechanisms behind reflexology and its effects on the body.
What sets your approach to reflexology apart from other practitioners in the field?
I believe that the key factors contributing to my effectiveness as a reflexologist are my training and commitment to ongoing education. In the United Kingdom, reflexology is currently not regulated, which means that individuals can become reflexologists through online courses or training offered in beauty salons. However, I have taken the initiative to receive training from a reputable association up to the highest level, which is Mastership. As a Clinical and Therapeutic Reflexologist, I am equipped to work with clients who have a wide range of health concerns.
My approach begins with an extensive health questionnaire, allowing me to gather important information about the client’s medical history and current issues. Based on this information, I develop a customized treatment plan that takes into account various techniques and methods I have learned or developed through my experience. It is important to note that I do not provide diagnoses, as that is the role of medical professionals. However, I approach each session as a detective, seeking to uncover potential underlying factors contributing to the client’s health issues. This often involves asking questions and creating a timeline of events related to their health problems.
I have found that many health issues can be influenced by past emotional or stress-related events. By exploring these factors, I aim to identify potential contributors to the development of diseases or imbalances in the body. When necessary, I collaborate with medical practitioners or refer clients to them for further evaluation or treatment. This integrative approach allows me to provide comprehensive care while respecting the boundaries of my profession as a reflexologist.
Through ongoing education and a dedication to staying informed about the latest research and developments in the field, I strive to enhance my knowledge and skills to better serve my clients and contribute to their well-being.
Could you tell us more about the additional therapies you offer, such as face reflexology and myofascial cupping? How do these complement traditional reflexology?
Face reflexology is based on the same principles as foot reflexology, offering similar therapeutic benefits. However, as a woman who appreciates a touch of pampering, I have added a delightful twist to the treatment. Alongside face reflexology, I incorporate the use of beauty serums and cleansers, carefully crafted by a local aromatherapist. To enhance the pampering experience, I also utilize tools such as gua sha and jade rollers. This combination of face and feet reflexology has become the second most sought-after treatment, attracting both women and men. In particular, face reflexology has proven to be highly beneficial for teenagers and individuals who are neurodivergent.
Additionally, cupping therapy has been a part of my life since childhood. In my home country of Poland, cupping was commonly used by family members for ailments like chest infections and general aches and pains. When I embarked on my journey with holistic therapies, I realized the potential of introducing people to the benefits of cupping. Many athletes seek my services for pain relief and to maintain muscle health. For example, when clients come to me with plantar fasciitis, I use cupping to increase circulation in the inflamed fascia. Sometimes, I apply cups and then work on the related area of the feet.
I often incorporate hot herbal compresses in my reflexology treatment (either facial or feet), and these are very popular in the winter months.
By incorporating these additional elements into my treatments, I aim to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable experience for my clients, catering to their physical and aesthetic needs.
How do you ensure a personalized and tailored experience for each client who seeks your holistic therapies?
Treating my clients with the same care and respect that I would expect for myself is at the core of my practice. I recognize the importance of providing a safe and welcoming space where clients feel heard and valued. Taking the time to listen to their stories and concerns is often a significant part of their healing journey. To ensure that I can dedicate ample time to each client, I schedule sessions with at least a 30-minute gap in between. This allows me to change towels, clean the treatment area, and maintain a calm and unhurried atmosphere.
When it comes to the actual treatment, as mentioned earlier, I thoroughly research and assess my clients’ conditions to determine the best techniques and methods to employ. However, I never proceed without the client’s consent. We engage in open discussions about the treatment plan, including the frequency and specific approaches to be used. Ultimately, the client has the final say, and I view my role as an advisor and facilitator, respecting their autonomy and preferences.
Creating a comfortable environment for my clients is paramount. Relaxing music is a significant element, not only to set a serene ambiance but also to help mask any external noises, especially since I work from my cabin. I ensure that my clients have access to props such as cushions, blankets, and extra padding to enhance their comfort during the treatment. Additionally, I offer home visits for individuals who may be unable to leave their homes or are bedridden.
There are moments when I intuitively sense that a different approach or therapy would benefit a client. For instance, during a session with a male client who was receiving face and feet reflexology, I detected a significant congestion in the flow of energy around his crown chakra. Trusting my instincts, I deviated from the original plan and incorporated Reiki into the treatment. Having been attuned to Reiki II, this transition felt natural to me. After the session, I explained what had transpired and why I had made that adjustment, emphasizing the importance of self-care. The client was deeply moved, shedding tears of gratitude and requesting a hug. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of being attuned to my clients’ needs and adapting my approach accordingly.
As a therapist, being in tune with my clients and providing them with a compassionate and personalized experience is a fundamental aspect of my practice.
Reflexology is often associated with relaxation and stress relief. Can you share any specific success stories or testimonials from clients who have benefited from your treatments in these areas?
One of the most heartwarming stories I cherish is about a young man with autism, who was 27 years old. Initially, his mother became my client and then requested if she could bring her son along. This young man was always in a rush, quickly drinking his tea and running everywhere. After his first session with me, he woke up the next day and told his mom, “My world has slowed down.” Since then, he has experienced moments of calmness during the treatments, even falling asleep at times. His lovely smiles and the fact that he enjoys coming to my sessions are truly rewarding. On a recent occasion, he sat in my garden after the treatment, taking his time until his mom gently reminded him to leave. It was an incredibly touching moment.
Another remarkable example is a woman in her 40s who had been suffering from severe headaches, brain fog, fatigue, and high stress levels. We agreed to a series of four weekly treatments using a specialized protocol for headaches combined with traditional reflexology. Within those four sessions, her headaches completely disappeared, and her stress levels significantly decreased. We then decided to space out the treatments, and now she comes once a month for what she fondly refers to as her “MOT” (maintenance) session. She has also been kind enough to refer her friends to me, saying, “I want you to fix my friends.” For any therapist, word-of-mouth referrals like these are the best compliments and advertisement one can hope for.
Lastly, there is a poignant story about one of my palliative care clients who unfortunately passed away four years ago. She was battling cancer and confined to her bed. I would visit her once a week, and she would express that those 60 minutes of treatment were the only time she could truly relax and momentarily escape from the pain she was experiencing.
These are just a few examples among many remarkable stories that have touched my heart throughout my practice. The greatest testament to the efficacy of my treatments is when clients return to me over the years and become cherished friends.
