Can you explain the role of spirituality in personal growth and how it can enhance relationships?
For me, spirituality is important and the starting point of my work. It’s about growing and becoming the person you were born to be. And that means getting to know who you are as a person and walking in congruence. I explain to my clients that no matter what they present, I work with them holistically, and this will include working on their spiritual life. Daily, I see couples in crisis and most of them have never worked on themselves first, or even know about spiritual concepts such as inner healing or trauma bonding and then enter into relationships with their own pain and are unable to deal with their partner’s pain also. What’s that phrase? “Hurt people hurt people”. Most of the clients I see have not yet understood spiritual concepts such as the power of their words and inner beliefs, forgiveness (or they balk on that, stemming from the misconception of what forgiveness entails). I get push-backs on some of the spiritual exercises I give my clients – until they do it, and realize there is real merit in what I give them.
I had a client who suffered from terrible backache on and off for years. She’d tried everything to heal the backache and had numerous amounts of physio/chiropractic work, but nothing helped. She was, however, very anti “woo-woo” as she called my practice. It wasn’t until it had been so crippling she was in danger of being signed off for quite a long time from a job she’s just got and one she enjoyed so much. She was so worried about losing her job; she was willing to try the “woo-woo”. Of course, she had trapped emotions following the death of a friend because of a car crash my client had caused. Once we released the inner pain, the physical pain left.
I work with couples on a dual level – I like to call it homework. They have work to do together as a couple together and then exercises on healing their own pain separately. It can be intense, but it works. They can see their patterns and have an opportunity to work on them in real-time, in scenarios where healing matters.
I feel I offer a much more rounded service if I am working with the client holistically – and I do have clients who are not interested in the spiritual side of my work (I lovingly call them Ant-Woo-Woos), but I don’t force anyone to do anything or embrace any concept they are not comfortable with.
How do you approach the process of helping individuals align their spiritual and personal goals?
I let my clients know that I do not use one specific modality. My goal is to help them best reach their goals. Their success is my success, but sometimes what they present with is sometimes not what they actually need. My introductory consultation with them is first to clarify their personal and spiritual goals and then identify any areas of overlap, common themes and values. My first exercise with a client, once we have agreed to work together, is what I call a Life Map, which the client has to complete before our first session. This helps me to identify patterns; however, more often than not, it helps the client to identify their own patterns as they complete the exercise and they can also tell where they are not being congruent.
I follow this with an exercise on values. It is always so heart-warming to see a client reach alignment with who they are, or when an exercise we do or something I say resonates with them. When they hit their heart-center, we know the process is working.
Sometimes helping clients get aligned means getting into their world by the things they watch or
listen to. My weekends are often spent watching/listening to things my clients have mentioned because it can be that these outside “influences” affect the client negatively. One of my clients listened to what I could only call “Goth Music”. His current relationship was dying; his will to believe in himself had already gone. I asked him what he did to get out of a negative spiral, and he told me he listened to a particular band. The music was his comfort zone but didn’t necessarily uplift him. When I listened to them too, I could understand why! I suggested he listen to something else and together we came up with something less soul-destroying. I never impose my will on a client. A simple change like that made a huge difference to his mental well-being.
I’m also intuitive, so before each client session or call, I consult my guides, my angels, my archangels for guidance. I ask what I need to know about a particular situation. This is just for me, to enhance my practice but clients sometimes ask me to read for them. If clients are OK with it, I will do a reading for them before our session, asking for a message specifically for them.
What type of services do you offer?
I offer Spiritual Life Coaching, Empowerment Coaching, Crystal Healing, Inner Child Healing, Meditation, Oracle Card Reading, Chakra Balancing, Reiki, I'm a Reiki Master Teacher so I can teach Heart Centered Reiki. I am a Law of Attraction Master Practitioner, NLP Time Line Therapist and a certified Mediator, specializing in conflict resolution.
How do you incorporate Reiki healing techniques into your coaching and therapy sessions? Can you describe a specific instance where Reiki played a significant role in facilitating healing or personal growth?
Now, Reiki plays an integral part of my business. I send Reiki to my practice, so my room is always “Reiki’d” . I do offer my clients support in terms of Reiki. As you know, Reiki is energy and if my clients want, or request, I create a Chi Ball for whatever healing they want, (anxiety, fear, stress) which the client can call in by a simple prayer request and receive the Reiki Healing when convenient for them. Sometimes, I am guided in session to offer Reiki – and I know when that intuitive nudge comes, it’s needed.
I will Reiki some of the bottles of water I offer and leave the others. I tell my clients which is which and even the “Anti Woo-Woo” ones take from the Reiki side! Sometimes a gentle whisper is more persuasive than a loud announcement.
When I first heard of Reiki, I didn’t really know what it was. But my father had died when we weren’t expecting him to and I was out of balance. My mother had died seven years previously and that was bad enough, but losing my last parent threw me, and I felt something was wrong on a soul level. I didn’t know anything about chakras, didn't know anything about meridians or energy. I just knew I was off, so I googled “Healing in the area”, and this name, Anjali Transformational Therapist. Something about her name drew me in so I called her. Suffice it to say, she is still in my life and she’s my mentor. The first thing I said to her was, “My chakras need balancing”. Bear in mind I didn’t know what Chakras were, or what they did, but that’s what came out of my mouth. And she laughed and I booked an appointment. The first time I went to see her, she didn’t Reiki me. We just talked. The second time I went to her, I had Reiki. I remember lying on that table thinking how weird this was, because even though my eyes were closed, I was aware of her hand movements. Suddenly, this enormous bubble just started rising within me. It felt like a laugh bubble, and I tried to stifle it because I didn’t want to embarrass myself, but to my surprise, I started to sob. And sob. And sob. I mean, I cried like I hadn’t cried in my whole life.
I went home, and I was just drained. The following day, I still felt low. I argued with my other half, he stormed out, and I was alone. Had some red wine, just sitting around the dining table when I saw a spider. I hated spiders. It started moving towards me and it was a big one. I was feeling so low I hadn’t even realized I wasn’t scared, as I would have been in the past. I spoke to the spider, and told it to stay where it was as though it would listen to me! It didn’t, and I pushed the chair back and it scraped along the floor. I watched as the spider stopped suddenly and folded itself into that small ball that they do. I immediately felt sorry for the spider. It was the weirdest feeling on Earth. I felt bad that I’d scared the spider so much that it was frightened and I actually started to cry. I remember apologizing to the spider and leaving it where it was and going to bed
The next time I saw Anjali I told her the story. Instead of focusing on me talking to a spider, she asked me about my spider phobia. The long and short of the story was that this was linked to a childhood memory and unforgiveness. I was able to let the pain go, and at the same time heal my fear of spiders. I’m no Arachnologist, but I no longer fear them.
How do you address the intersection between spirituality and mental health? Are there any precautions or considerations you take when working with individuals who have mental health concerns?
I’m really careful about spirituality and mental health. It’s a really sensitive and complex topic and I believe it is important to know your client. That’s why I do the free consultation. Of course, as therapists we cannot always be fully cognisant of any mental health issues in the past unless the client reveals them (clients do also have to complete an intake form). In the safe space I create for them, we can have an open discussion if they reveal any challenges to me.
As a RMT, I understand the power and purpose of grounding and I teach this to my clients. I also offer distant reiki between sessions, if clients experience anxiety.
I do rely on my guides to point me in the right direction and they are never wrong, even though I have questioned some of their “suggestions”. I believe every one of us is here for a reason and maybe we have the key someone else needs to open the door to their success and happiness and I trust that when I have an intuitive nudge to work with someone, there is a higher purpose for that.
How do you continue to deepen your own spiritual practice and knowledge? What steps do you take to ensure ongoing growth and development in your professional role?
I’m a sucker for spiritual books. I own hundreds with more on audible. I enjoy listening to an audiobook when I’m driving (hubby and son do not!). But more often than not, it’s clients that help me deepen my spiritual practice. They teach me, or I learn something new from them or for them so that I can better serve them. Florence Scovel Shinn wrote : There is an old saying, “No man is your enemy, no man is your friend, every man is your teacher”, and I have learned some things about me, and the world via my clients.
I have a young man who uses me as part of his spiritual routine. So, he goes to the gym on the days we have a session. He takes his journal, and he does a meditation, and then he’ll do a workout. Then he’ll come to see me. We do a meditation together and then he breaks his fast with me. I love being part of that, plus I get porridge made lovingly by him.
At the moment, I have just sent someone some homework which is doing a 30-day self-love programme. It’s my programme, but I’m doing it again alongside the client. Congruence. I’m not here to show anyone anything. I’m walking through life with them.
We grow by doing, not by reading. Practice makes it permanent.
I do have to complete CPD – I’m a member of the Complementary Medical Association, so I do online courses in between work, clients, research and sleep. I cannot help someone become the best version of themselves that they want to be, if I’m not the best version of myself.
I have also written a course, S.O.U.L.L Healing (Spiritual Odyssey into Understanding Life & Love) that will encompass how spirituality can actively enhance your relationships with your partner, career, finances and most importantly yourself. This has been a couple of years in the making, it is intensive, but it will be rewarding – a one-stop shop for personal and relationship spiritual growth.
