So, without further ado, let us embark on this enlightening conversation with Kassia Sobey, a visionary wordsmith who beckons us to traverse the ethereal corridors of the human spirit.

What inspired you to become a writer in the spiritual and mystical genre?

When the Coronavirus arrived, the forced isolation already felt familiar. I am a solitary creature for the most part. To make room for what was taking place, I started slowing down my professional life.

I emptied the busy elements of my life slowly at first, then completely. Allowing this essential need to be empty, so what was in the ‘waiting room” could enter.

Words on my pages flowed forth with more intention. I began writing with a bent towards publishing a book. My first book: Muses, Woolgathering, & Ghosts, was born! It’s how I expressed life during those times with a spiritual lens. I took photographs on my walks during the first two years of the Pandemic and added them to my book. The pictures tell a story in themselves.

Having always been involved with spiritual life, I love you incorporated the term mystic in your identity. It creates a distinctive online persona. There is more magic in looking at life with a mystical lens. When my lens is open, my inner guides, muses, and the vast realm that the mystic encompasses shows up more in my daily life. Every day “ordinary” alters and is never the same. It activates my life. Turns it up!

The other day I heard someone say that we have another pandemic looming, and that is one of isolation. When I was a practicing hypnotherapist, I found we don’t relax into our aloneness. We’re generally not taught about this part of life though it is very real for all of us.

What had once given me passion and meaning to meet the day has changed. So, I take more walks, and do my best to invite in the solitude as a co-creator.

How do you approach the research process for your books?

I don’t write long novels or history-based books, so there is not a lot of research I need to do. I used to write articles for a publication in California a million years ago. Then, I was at the library every day. Kudos also to Google!

I have a BA in Metaphysical science and began studying the foundations of spirit, science of mind, shamanism, and a few other disciplines since the 1990s. Being a curious person, as so many of us are, can make our minds crazy. Enter meditation and grounding myself in the morning.

Can you tell us about a particular spiritual experience that has influenced your writing?

Every day, something shows up and feels like a message is coming through. I had a younger life that was wild. My parents had never taught me about boundaries. They had none themselves. Something I never realized supported me, both spiritually and through the people I met along the way. Looking back, I have no doubts that guidance was always there in a variety of forms. The Pandemic opened another major door. I waited to see where it went. I’m still on that journey.

I often walk labyrinths. I have one very close to my home. As I walk the labyrinth, I connect with what I refer to as Grandmother Wisdom and a few other parts like my younger self. I get so much out of these times. This is a sacred ritual for me. I also watch for signs…. birds, turtles (my very first book; Henry the Turtle), clouds, winds, and words I hear that stand out. Going into a used bookstore waiting for a book to call to me…that sort of thing. (I wrote a story about that in my book, A Collection of Tiny Stories, Diminutive tales from the Tip of my Imagination called “The Bookstore”).

What do you hope readers will take away from your books?

To enjoy! That one person, one heart, will read a phrase or a tiny story that inspires them. Maybe it will touch a memory, a dream they wish to pursue, or begin a healing. It’s unique to each person.

There are some people that read a page in the morning and evening of their favorite book. Just open a book and see where it opens. There are no coincidences.

I see where you write under a pen name. Can you share why you made that decision?

I thought about this for years before I chose to. My friends and family know me as Kas or Kassia. My first name is something else that I never felt good with, never related to. My teacher in numerology looked at both names from a numerical aspect and said I made the right decision to make Kassia/Kas my primary name. When it was time to publish, I wanted to honor and make peace with my first name. CK Sobey did that for me.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring writers in the spiritual and mystical genre?

If this genre is an area that you want to follow, fantastic! It is where your spirit longs to be and share with others. It, like all creative endeavors, is constantly reshaping itself, growing. Let nothing stop this innovative process. It may slow down and then travel at light speed. Just write!

For me, there is a muse that wants me to expand my style and write something quite new. So, I am following ideas, staying open, enjoying what is coming across the pages. I’m curious and excited to see where it goes.

Don’t let Ms. Judgement/The Critic take charge. There is purpose in having a critical side, but it shouldn’t lead. I tell these parts of me to move to the back of the car! They can enter later in the editing stage, not when I’m creating!
