If you are pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant, then you may have heard of hiring a doula to be at your birth. Hiring a doula can be immensely beneficial in many ways. For some people, the support of a doula is more important after the actual labor, the role varies depending on the needs and desires of the parents.
Amber Tapley from Amber Dawn Holistic Wellness provides evidence based information and heart guided practices to ensure your journey to parenthood is a well supported one, through Registered Massage Therapy, Childbirth education, birth support and postpartum care. In this interview, Amber tells MysticMag about her journey in providing holistic care, education, support and love throughout pregnancy.
Could you tell us a bit about your journey and what inspired you to pursue a career in birth work?
My love of birth and babies has existed as long as I can remember, but became a passion and driving force after having my first child. I knew that it could be better. That birthing people could be more supported, better educated and have their voices heard. Here in Cape Breton, we need doulas. We need pregnancy support. We need skilled, compassionate and loving birth professionals to change the landscape of what a healthy and happy birth can look like! Even I didn’t know just how much of a calling birth work would be though, until a dear friend asked me to attend the birth of her child. I had no training. I was nervous. I wasn’t a doula but she had faith and she knew then what I didn’t: that I could tap into a sense of calm and intuitive wisdom that would serve her (and all birthing people!) well.
What exactly is a Doula and how does it differ from a midwife?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical and education support during pregnancy. We do not offer medical support like a midwife would. I often describe it as a combination between a coach and a best friend, one who is there to ensure you have access to all the information you may need, holds you up when you need it, and reminds you of how strong you are!
Apart from the great value that a Doula has in the labor process are there other stages during pregnancy where this would be an additional resource?
Yes!! Prenatal education and preparation is KEY to an empowered and educated experience. Also, the postpartum period is one that is often neglected and I aim to fill that gap through extended postpartum care and support.
Often during birthing the father to be may feel sidelined, how would you support a partner during labor?
I support the partner the same ways I support the birthing person. By ensuring that they are fed, hydrated and comfortable. Checking in often to ensure they feel empowered and aware of what is going on. I also assist in advocating for the family, if needed.
Lastly, do you have any coping techniques to share that you find most helpful?
Yes! Movement is underrated as a coping technique! Walking, swaying, dancing are all great! Also, breath! Our breath is one of our most wonderful tools for engaging our parasympathetic nervous system and one that we can access ANYTIME!
