This week, we had the opportunity to speak with Jane Metcalfe, a fully qualified Reiki Master. We discussed her beginnings, what kind of therapies she offers, and what she loves most about her job.
When did you first know that being a Holistic healer was your calling and how did it come about?
I have always been passionate about us taking responsibility for our own well-being. When I was younger, I saw lots of family members go to the doctors for help with their chronic conditions, cash in their prescriptions without question, and not take responsibility for their own part in the healing process.
As a result, even though conventional medicine was great for treating and reducing their symptoms, they were not buying into the whole “team effort” of making themselves better by changing their lifestyle, diet, habits, and attitude.
I always knew there had to be something else and I did all I could to maintain my own health and my children’s health naturally.
In 1998 I was at a T’ai Chi class when I met a classmate who told me he did Reiki. I had not heard of it before and the next week he brought a book in for me. I was enthused!
All the dots that I had stamped in my wellbeing journey had just been joined up by learning about Reiki and how it worked. It was my light bulb moment, and I knew that this was what I had been looking for. In the pre-millennial years, Reiki was not known about a lot and I had to work to find a Master’s and then had to travel to get my training.
What kinds of therapies do you offer?
Reiki is a vibrational therapy – i.e., it works on our energy field and raises our vibration by channeling Universal Life Force Energy, I love all aspects of other vibrational therapies – such as Animal Reiki, Sound Healing, Crystal therapy, and EFT.
I also offer Indian Head Massage, Swedish Massage, Facials, and Baby Massage training. I am an accredited training provider and teach holistic therapies too.
What can a person expect from your therapies?
I work on a vibrational level, so this entails raising a person’s frequency and lifting their energy. As Reiki goes to the cause, rather than the symptom, the practitioner is merely a channel for the energy, and it finds its own level.
My clients always feel lighter and brighter, deeply relaxed and one of the main benefits is that sleep patterns and sleep quality are improved. Energy blockages are broken down and the body is given the opportunity to detox – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Mental focus is improved, and the whole person is much more balanced and grounded.
I have seen IVF clients – not necessarily for the medical side – the specialists have that covered well, but for the emotional aspect of the process, it can be very stressful and if mum gets help with her anxiousness about her expectations, she can sleep well then it helps her body be at optimal health for what lies ahead.
I have helped with PTSD, epilepsy, panic attacks, confidence, pain reduction, stress, and grief. I never fail to marvel at how effective Reiki is and how it can restore someone so holistically and naturally.
What is the most important detail in maintaining a relationship of mutual trust with customers?
The most important detail has to be transparency and honesty. I NEVER claim to cure, I work without ego and if a client asks me if Reiki can help them, I always say – “let’s try it and we will see”. I am very proud of my integrity, I have worked and developed myself for over 20 years as a Reiki practitioner, so I know my craft and I have seen many marvelous results.
Am I a healer? No. I am just a channel and I have been trained to do this. I’m not special, just very competent, and highly qualified. I only teach Reiki face to face, and this maintains the ethics and quality of Doctor Mikao Usui’s Reiki training, and I prefer smaller groups so that I can develop relationships with my students. (Dr. Usui founded Reiki in Japan in the early 1920s)
Was there anything you felt you needed to do to deepen or develop your psychic abilities?
As Reiki is something that can be learned, it awakens our innate natural healing abilities and is such a gentle, natural process I personally have never felt drawn to develop my psychic abilities.
I am a very intuitive practitioner and am aware that we have guides assisting us in our healing practice. I always give thanks to my guides, as I know that I am working with higher consciousness and energy much greater than me and others.
What do you love most about your profession?
What do I love about my profession? I am passionate about giving people the tools and knowledge to be responsible for their own health and wellbeing.
I love seeing a client’s face glowing after a Reiki treatment, or sound therapy, feedback is so important, and hearing them tell me how their symptoms have reduced, their anxiety has reduced, their confidence has improved, their pain has faded fills me with joy.
I love teaching Reiki and sending a new healer out into the world to help others – wouldn’t it be lovely if we had so many more Reiki healers that we reached that critical mass stage where it was as common in a household as a packet of paracetamol or a gentle healing hand on a brow to treat and soothe?
