This week, we had the unique opportunity to speak with Rachel Kirkland, The Modern Shaman. We learned more about her Shamanistic sessions, what types of readings are most frequently requested, and what she loves most about her job.
What inspired you to start your psychic reading business?
Honestly, I’ve always had the heart to help people. That has always been my continued inspiration, to just use my abilities to help people. My start wasn’t as a formal “business”. I had been working behind the scenes doing missing persons, homicide, and kidnapping cases for a while before I decided to turn it into something I could support my family with.
Before the business side of things, my clients just came from word of mouth and I never had a formal strategy, website, business card, or anything. But, after I had my children, I wanted to leave the emotional intensity of psychic casework and chose a more formal business structure for one on one sessions. I started small with fairs, and it quickly bloomed into a full-fledged entrepreneurial business.
What is the most popular type of reading that customers are looking for? What are the most common concerns that interest them?
Most people seek traditional psychic reading. However, I will say, within those sessions, oftentimes the questions daisy-chain into past life interests, or medical intuition concerns. So, the typical psychic sessions can go in a lot of directions. The most common questions are the biggies… 1) Love 2) Finances 3) Health 4) Career 5) Family.
Are some types of psychic readings more demanding or difficult than others?
No, not for me. Once I’m connected, I’m connected. It is not more demanding. I will say ethically/morally some are more challenging than others. (When people want to know if their spouse is cheating or when someone wants to know how a loved one died when there is suspicion, etc.) It is not more difficult to see the vision; however, it is difficult information emotionally to share with your clients.
What is Shamanistic Healing, and what does a healing session look like?
I cannot speak for all Shamans. Just like a psychic reading looks different with each individual reader, a shamanic healing session will look and feel different with each shaman. Even within my sessions, they are highly unique to the person needing the healing.
However, there are typical aspects of the healing session that are standard. The sessions typically start with an intake process, where my energy meld with the person being healed and feel where their emotional, physical, or psychic body is blocked and where the traumas are being stored.
From there I use the drum to loosen the blockages (similar to other sound therapy techniques) Shamanic drums usually resonate around 4HZ and it is that lower frequency that is able to move deep into our subconscious layering while inducing a trance-like state from the repetitive beat.
From this hypnagogic state, everything loosens and can be unlocked. I use my rattle, windpipe, stones, bags of dirt, and feathers to move out the energy that has been loosened and in the end, deeply transformative healing takes place. It is a very organic and natural process, but everyone’s reaction is unique to their reason for needing the healing.
In this field, it is often thought that word-of-mouth and personal recommendations are the most important when picking a psychic reader – is this true?
Absolutely! I have been in this business long enough to know that just like any other business, there are people who have a pure heart for helping and those that are not in it for the right reasons. I think when it comes to asking for spiritual advice, life advice, health guidance, there is nothing more important than finding a practitioner with integrity.
I take my work very seriously, and I know, with all that we are able to see, it demands a level of transparency and honesty that few other careers require. Therefore, I highly recommend asking for recommendations from people you trust.
If you don’t know anyone, then ask around and pay attention to your own internal guidance as to who you feel drawn to. There is a lot of over-dramatization built into the mysteries of this work, but true seers and readers will not emanate drama – you should feel truth, simplicity, and clarity with what they share.
What do you love most about your profession?
I love helping people, empowering people to make decisions that better their lives, and encouraging them to grow spiritually into who they came here to be! I always say I have the best job in the world!
